Sorry to resurrect this one...

...but has anyone fitted the lighter socket in place of the curry hook? I picked up the part from the dealer yesterday (cheers for the part number PJP), and went to fit it. However, what I thought was a plug in amongst the wiring bundle behind the curry hook turned out to be an inline diode or something!
Just had a look at my wiring loom and as you say it looks like they have put a diode in the connector from the symbols on it.

Either this is the wrong thing, OR they have put this in the connector for some other reason. I wonder if the on board computer thinks theres a wiring fault if its left open circuit, and this 'fools' it into thinking everything is ok?

Perhaps some one else can answer this? I'll take a look at the maintenance CD and see if theres anything useful on there

Cheers guys,

Choopertoo: I don't have a storage box, just a felt flap that seems to provide access to the top of the suspension?! Is yours a 5dr? I'll have another look for a white connector, but I'm pretty sure mine doesn't have one :( Do you remember seeing a diode as well as the connector? The diode is black and square and appears to come off the loom with the 2 boot light wires... Is this where you found the white connector?

PJP: I guess I could remove the diode and see if any faults appear, but something like that may only show up on the diagnostic machine, not the dash display. If they left the connector for the socket back there, there should be no reason to replace it with a diode because if nothing were plugged into the lighter socket then the circuit would be open anyway, right? Unless there is something drawing a tiny amount of current in the socket itself...?
The plug would be no in danger of shorting because it's a female connector (totally enclosed), so no reason to remove it for that reason. Unless of course there has recently been a new version of the wiring loom in which they finally removed the support for the rear power outlet :(

This is Fiat, so I guess anything's possible (like removing the socket and putting in a hook in the first place!!!!!).

While I'm on the topic, I really think that they should've left the rear interior light in too. It's very dark in the back without it because the light at the front is completely shielded from behind, obviously because originally they knew that they were putting a rear light in! They should've redesigned the front light before simply removing the back one. :bang:

Wow, makes you realise all the stuff they are removing gradually :(

Got an 02 plate, with rear socket, storage box and light in the boot, lol. Plus I still have the MFD which I think has gone on later Abarths....Crazy.

Will get my digicam out this weekend and try and get a picture of what it looks like .... about time I posted some pics of my Stilo .....
It looks like this in my car - it appears the diode unit is just slid into the standard connector to me - can anybody else confirm that cable and connector is the same one they have on a power outlet?

BTW I'm talking about the black connector at the end of the 2 red wires in the photo.

Johnpen. The link to the parts cat is excellent. How come things are so cheap on there. Eg, side skirts for £45! I guess they are not retail prices!
This is FIAT ePER, everyone has been able to access it for a good few months after a member kindly hosted it for us.

Prices may be slightly out of date, but it is what the FIAT maindealers use. Knowledge is power ;)

PJP: that's exactly the same as mine. I'll have a go at removing the diode later to see if it leaves a useable plug, and then I'll get the multimeter out. If it is for the lighter socket, it should show 12V when the ignition is on, but then again so should a lot of other stuff!

If anyone with a lighter socket can confirm that it connects to the same red wires as shown in the photo above, I would be enormously grateful!

FYI, when I order the part from my local dealer, it cost me £8.62. I suspect that the prices in the catalogue are trade prices, which would make sense i guess if the catalogue is meant for dealers?

Stuart: Excuse me if I'm being thick, but what's an MFD???

Ah yes, I remember seeing that in some brochures. I've got the latest one here though, and it looks like you're right - 'Monochromatic multifunction LCD instrumentation' is now standard across the range :(

Interesting....
Mine should have 'Central locking with dead-locks (including fuel flap)'

I'd hardly call a cap you have to put the key in to unlock (and then fiddle for hours trying to refit the damn thing) 'Central locking'!!!! That's another thing they removed - the locking flap. I guess they forgot to update the brochure

Pjp,

Just had alook on my new 1.9jtd and I can see the two red cables, but there is no diode connected to them. I have a the subwoofer connected so I wonder whether this is also powering that. Can't really tell unless I take the subwoofer off though..

Stan..

Stan:
What are your two red cables connected to? Mine are terminated in this black diode, so I'm guessing that yours end in a plug or something?
Is your sub the one from Fiat? Is it any good?

Cheers,

Rich

Rich,

It's hard to tell where/ how the cables are terminated as I can't get behind the sub so i'm not sure whether there is another connection for power, but I can see a big socket at the front of the Fiat sub. I pretty impressed with the sub as it really makes the difference when listening to music which has alot bass. Turning the volume up certainly makes the car shake! :D

Stan.

Talking to one of the guys I work he had an interesting thought that hadn't occured to me. Perhaps this connector is in a series circuit with something else, and hence the need to ensure it's not open circuit.

I'll take a closer look at the service manual - not sure if it has actual circuit diagrams or not

Paul

It does appear to be in series...

When I removed the diode just now the boot light went out! :(
Means that if i connected the socket to this, either it would only have power when the boot is open, or it would be powered all the time (not what I want - need to have power only when the ignition is on, like the front socket).
