The pollen filter is meant to be changed at every service interval but it's only done as an additional customer expense and not included with the service. It really gets surprisingly clogged so reduces heater blower efficiency.

Newer pollen filters (according to eLearn) are actually snipped on the top and bottom so they can be folded to facilitate easier removal and refitting, and older filters may be snipped manually to aid this too. Tried saving the images but they save as some strange format so I can't post them up :bang:

Got this from a bosch filter i put hope it helps even more
Changed mine today (2006 1.4 16v active aircon 5 door) and can confirm you need a 5.5mm socket, preferably 1/4 inch drive, to get the little screw out of the cover hatch of the filter. Also you would need to remove the plastic tray that stops assorted wiring falling down onto your feet from above the pedals. This has a side piece which obstructs the slot that the filter goes in and it is impossible to move it out of the way. The tray is only held by two plastic press studs and they will break when you prise the tray downwards. Dont worry, they are easily replaced with the type of button stud that you can get in packs at Halfords. Snipping the filter as previously described is still necessary in order to get it round the clutch pedal and steering column.

hi tried removing the cover next to the clutch pedal but the screws / fittings were just turning when i was trying to undo them. are they clips , screws plugs. any help would be good because i'm not getting any air out of the lower vents.
Providing they don't break, you can use the same ones again but after a few times they may become looser.

Mioght sund like a silly question, but in a RHD drive car, which side is the filter on?
The filter is in the same position for RHD and LHD cars and is accessed from the right side (when sitting in the car) of the center console.
Completed this today using this guide and all I can say is, What a MASSIVE difference!! There was almost zero airflow before hand and the filter itself was completely disgusting with loads of hair and twigs etc. It was completely filthy...
It is a tricky place to get to but I found that using a ratchet and screwdriver socket attachment worked well. All in it took about 30 minutes and the filter cost a fiver… Worth a million pounds in improvement!

The 2 fasteners on my abarth, on the drop down panel, if you push the centre pin of the fastener with a small screwdriver they pop out
Just in case anyone with a UK (right hand drive) vehicle struggles:
The filter cover is right at the very back of the footwell on the driver side, I looked at it blankly for ages because it's quite well tucked away. There is a little bolt that you need to remove first, and you could probably do with taking the overhead wirecover off (above the pedals), but I'm not sure its absolutely necessary (didn't seem to be too much in the way)
The filter itself is very easy to replace though, took just a couple of seconds, once I found the cover that is!
Honestly hope this helps, as the diagrams didn't really point to where exactly it was.

The photograph on page 2 of the guide shows exactly where the cover, and the screw and clips that hold it on are.

I went to replace the pollen filter since I had weak airflow from the vents. Turned out that the plate covering the filter was missing and half or more of the airflow blew on the inside of the footwell. Had a bunch of leaves all over there. Some smuck had left the plate out. Had to use ducktape to seal the hole after I replaced the filter. Now the fan blows 100 times better!

Hey, I've been trying to remove the panel on picture 2 but I can't get it off. Those screws can't be removed with a screwdriver so do I have to use force or is there a quick way of removing them?

also a good idea to spray your favourite aftershave on the filter itself so when the blower kicks in is nice smelling breeze

What the above description doesn't include is that to remove the trim, cover and extract the filter you have to put the steering wheel right up, jam your head down by the pedals and stabilise yourself with a foot either side of the passenger headrest...
