Hi to all.

Must start by saying that I'm new to diagnostics, and that I've always managed to do my own diy, and I'd like to keep it that way.........................if I can.

Hence, my recent jump into the world of diagnostics.

The car in question is a Fiat Panda 2004 1.2 petrol. 80,000 miles on the clock.

I scanned the car and got PO171 and PO174 codes displayed.

I was chatting to the owner and discovered that they were having problems with their petrol cap, they found it to be fiddly to work. I checked it out and showed them how to use it properly. Because they were not closing it right, they were getting a smell of petrol at the filler cap. Once the cap was put on correctly........................no more smell.

This issue got me thinking, could this be why the faults came up in the first place. I cleared the faults on the scan tool, took the car for a spin. No engine fault light came up. From my understanding of the codes that were there, an issue from the EVAP system would give a lean condition, instead of the vapours going to the engine, they were going out the filler cap. Assuming that my diagnosis of the situation is correct...............all is well. I looked for leaks, any signs of cracks on hoses, inlet manifold looks good.

On closer examination of the scan tools data, I noticed that the post cat 02 sensor remains in open loop. Even at normal operating temperature, it still remains in open loop.
The pre cat 02 sensor goes into closed loop within 3 minutes.
I did notice that oil had leaked onto the post cat 02 jack connector, I've since cleaned it, but I'm wondering, has the oil shorted out the circuit, and that cleaning it has come too late. Must mention that the 02 sensor stays at a steady 0.850v. in open loop. I did remove the sensor and put a blow torch to the element and did go from 0.01 to 0.85v. The ohms reading came in at 6 ohms but the recommended figure is 3.1 ohms. The one thing I didn't check was the sensor getting 12volts from the ECU.
That's where I am at the moment, if anyone could help out....................I'd be delighted.
This is only a suggestion....................Should we not start up a new STICKY for troubleshooting DIAGNOSTICS. There's probably plenty like me, who are tiptoeing into diagnostics, and are trying to get a handle into this area. I for one would be a happy camper.
Sorry about the length of this post.
Thanks a million for looking.
JOHN.
