Hello

I have a phone interview for a summer placement with Transport for London in a few days. I have never had any sort of proper interview before, so I was wondering if people could give me some tips? How should I prepare, are there any likely questions that might be asked, things like that.
Also whats the best way to start and end the call?

Thanks very much

My advice would be to speak extremely clearly, constantly be on your toes and don't be afraid to ask them to repeat a question if you don't quite hear them. Be extremely polite over the phone and try and answer questions to the best of your capabilities.

What I have done in the past is just sit down on a chair, put my feet up and just have a friendly chat. You've also got to know not to **** bricks, that's when people start to get all dry mouthed and start stuttering.

Seeing as it's a summer placement, I wish you the best of luck.

Sorry I couldn't help any more. :(

Keep your CV handy as they're bound to question something on it, it's not likely to be competency based as those are more often done in person ... and I can't stand them but business seem to love them! Generally telephone interviews are pretty informal and are good ways to identify how friendly, polite and approachable you are. Be yourself and you'll be fine! :)

Thanks for everyones suggestion!

yes it is for a uni summer placement

Just had the interview, it went ok. Was three main questions, I struggled with the first one a bit but I thought the second one went ok. Next stage is a face to face interview but only 4 people get chosen for that out of god knows how many people applied

Well I hope it's good enough, good luck (y)

Some people fall into the trap that they are just a chat. I used to conduct phone interviews, as well as whats said above about phone manner and how someone talks and answer questions, we used them to filter out candidates that answered specific questions in a specific way. (like everyone does)

For example, one question was that the opening hours of the centre was 6am until 12am, and that the majority of shift patterns had 8pm 10pm and 12am finishes in them and how they felt about working these hours. a negative answer (preferbly i can only work 9-5 for example) meant no actual interview. same with a question regarding computer systems (learning and using bespoke programs) their response was used to gain an idea of their level of confidence with computers- no or low confidence, no interview.

Just be aware of what questions are being asked, and if you were interviewing what would be a desirable answer for the role your going for
