... the stupid EU tyre labels are pointless ... They're tested in a lab ...

Which of the testing authorities is flooding their lab for the wet grip tests & testing external tyre noise indoors?

Looking at the Noise ratings on tyres it seems that a 3 decibel difference on the external noise translates into twice the sound. Hopefully someone will be able the explain that.

Of the 3 figures on the EU label the Noise figure relative to the Fuel Efficiency (Low rolling resistance) & Wet Braking might prove the most useful figure. Seen figures varying from 67 decibels to 73 decibels.

I'd like to see how you'd make ...

I won’t be making anything – given access to qualified & professional experts.

But let’s bring you back on track …

The same one making pointless, circular, and facetious arguments based on hearsay, rather than fact.

I've learned quite a bit on this thread in relation to the new EU tyre labels. I like Caravadossi would rely on expert tests carried out by the likes of ADAC and Autobld, etc. Let's keep it friendly.

I'd like to see how you'd make an anechoic chamber outdoors. But then as you're an expert, you'd know how sound is accurately and repeatedly measured, wouldn't you?

A bit sarcy for a mod bgunn : /

ADAC yes, Auto Bild not so much.

There are so many variables to consider, different cars ask different things of different tyres and there are even some cars which are designed with a specific set of tyres in mind.

It seems like some people are tyre experts on paper (Caravadossi, I'm looking at you!) and seem to ignore the experiences of others purely based on specs that were tested in a lab, rather than by a person on real British roads in the actual car that most of us drive. I'm not saying that specs and ratings are not something that you should consider, but they're not the be all and end all, they were merely put in place to get some of the quite frankly ridiculously rubbish eastern European and Chinese **** off our roads (or at least highlight how utterly crap it is). if it weren't for the wrong speed rating, I'd happily get some T1-R's because of Jnoile's opinion of them, the opinion of a competent person means more than stuff tested in a lab.....

TR1..? Even if the load rating is incorrect maxi ; )

why is the bit of side wall with the writing on so thin on michelin tyres? checked a few today winter and summer and they all are the same rest of the wall is solid but ring where the main name and size is is very thin. all the way around. Other makes were not like this

It could be their method of building 'comfort' into the tyre? Maybe other brands use a more consistent thickness which is thin-ish overall than a tyre wall that is thick-thin-thick across its height?

I would use 2 similar cars on a regular basis - one with a 55 & a 45 profile tyre. Granted the 55 profile is a touring tyre but there is much better feedback with the 45 profile and the slight loss in comfort is worth it. If I had the 55 R15 in the 500 I would be dearly tempted to go 195/50 R15 despite the insurance implications or source a set of OEMs in 16s preferably in the multispokes so they can be powdercoated OR a set of new 'cheap' A500 16s. These are currently shed with Contis 2 and as a overall package are hard to fault.

Conti 2's are not so good.
