I believe you can get a mouse keyboard combo for the ps2.

The reason that the graphics are crap is the resolution of most TV's is somthing like 300x266 pixels. As long as you play consoles on low res tv's they will always be crap.

Of course only having to render enough pixels for tv's does make consoles faster than pc's for the same relative technology. PC games would fly at 400 x 300 pixel resolutions.

I agree with you on prefering the PC though.

The benefits of the consoles is that you buy a game safe in the knowledge that you won't get any conflicts with other software and that your hardware is up to the task. None of this nvidia geforce 4 not supported in Battlefield 2 crap. The consoles are generally smaller, neater and easier to use. Game in, switch on, play.

However, in having the above you lose out on web browsing, instant messenger, microsoft office apps, printing, scanning, HUGE storage for ripped DVDs (Ahem), digital photography (useful for "educational" photography shall we say;)), ability to make CD, DVD copies, ability to phone, fax, email and relatively cheap upgrades to new technology etc etc etc

For the moment PC's rule

Interesting read this thread, especially as i'm looking to upgrade my PC at the moment :)

Currently got a P4 2.5 533 Bus with 1GB ram, was looking at the dual core Intels and the AMD 64 chips, but I don't have any 64bit apps, and the 32bit ones run slower than on the equivalent 32 bit chip. Think the prime target for me is the 6xx series Intel chips which are the P4s with 2MB cache (so an Extreme edition at half the price really).

As for games, I have a PS2 for that, it's good enough, for the amount I play games (not much) the playability of a console outweighs the effort required for PC gaming ;) Hopefully the PS3 "cell" will hop the console world up a few steps on the ladder, but the PC gaming world will ALWAYS have better graphics and performance etc. With dual SLI systems etc. you can easily spend £3k on a gaming PC now, they are the no.1 driving force behind HDTV in the UK. But personally i'd rather spend 3k on a new car :)

What's worth looking at in the AMD chip world at the mo ? my last AMD was an Athlon and it was DIRE :(
Is AGP dead now ? is it PCI-E or nothing ?

I would say any of the AMD 64 chips are good value for money. I have a 3500 Newcastle which was reasonably priced when i got it and now they are even cheaper and with new cores like Venice and San Diego.

Are you sure 64 bit processors will run 32 bit apps slower? I've never heard of that. At least you will be futureproof for the new Windows.

I would say fo PCI-E if you can for futureproofing and it is uncertain how well AGP will be catered for in the future. The new 7800 series are PCI-E only at the minute and Nvidia don't have plans to change that unless there is the demand. Currently PCI-E outsells AGP at ethe top end.

64 bit chips will run 32 bit apps at about 10% faster than a 32 bit chip.

Trust me, I own one ;)

As for consoles vs PC for games, at least with consoles you are sure the game will work first time. How often have you bought a PC game and had to adjust something in your set up to accomodate it.

I have and use both, but gimme a PS2 anyday for simple, ease of use gameplay.

Can't beat MOH, COD or Unreal on PC tho' and it's also great for MMORPG stuff like EVE and Matrix. Oh, and Flight Sim too ;)
