trying to put a faster processor into my pc, got a 3.2 P4 which i think should work. I have flashed the motherboard bios but if i set the cpu speed to 3.2 the system comes up with an error message regarding the processor and reverts to 1.6GHz. if i set the processor to 1.6 the PC starts with no error messages. Any ideas what might be the problem?

sure ur motherboard can handle the processor...

Smee

could be an incompatible bus speed, my motherboard is 400/533, i think the 3.2's were 800. Don't know much about this, anyone know if the processors were back compatible?

The P4 3.2E is on a 200FSB (Quad pumped 800er)

Chances are that if your mobo is trying to downclock to 1.6Ghz, it is probably a 133FSB (533) and therefore can't take P4 800's.

Told you :)

The P4's aint backwards compatible, and the fastest P4 you can get on a 533 frontsid-er is 2.4Ghz.

I'm actually selling one if your interested. (This pc I'm on now)

DO-H!!!

came from a 2GHz so not sure 2.4 will be much of an upgrade. No point in changing this motherboard to one that will suit processor, if i'm changing the motherboard i'll change to the new socket, which means new ram and graphics card too :/

i'll have a think.

Yup that kinda sucks.

Hence why I'm upgrading to an FX-57 with 2gb (4x512mb) of Corsair XMS 400 ram. 2-2-2-5 timings - It turned up today, so just waiting for CPU and DFI Nforce2 LanParty motherboard now.

Oh baby!

;)

Ah, Ian, glad to see you have seen the light and come over from the dark side to the glories of AMD64 ;) ;)

Welcome to the club :)

hmmm, might treat myself to make myelf feel better when i sell the bravo. Then again i keep saying i'm going to buy a kit car when i sell the bravo. Oh well.

She's running happy at 2.133GHz, what an upgrade!!!!!

All because i purchased GTA SA. Damb game! Played fine on the 2GHz until you got into an intense gun battle where it got very slow, when i looked into it processor was just locking out at 100% so thought this would be a cheap way round it! Wrong :)

and they say on the box it will play on a P3, that must be nasty.

Rob,

I was waiting for a sarky comment from you ;)

Well, I'm gonna hold my hands up and say... who cares? I get all my computer stuff for absolutely nothing, so why not go the whole way.

I'm still debating between the dualcore 4800+ and FX-57 though ;)

Not Intel for one reason (and this is not an excuse) - Testing :)

Edit: Cynical - Chances are your GFX card or Memory is bottlenecking by the way.

You lucky thing you ! Don't s'pose you could sneak me a dual core, could you ?!?! ;)

At those prices, it's a damn good job you get the kit for free ! :)

Rob

Ian: 2.4Ghz the fastest 533fsb cpu? Nope, sorry but you're wrong. Either that or my computer is very 'special'....

3.06GHz 533FSB Hyper-Threaded Pentium 4

And also, you can get 2.80GHz from a 533FSB non HT cpu as shown here:

Current Status: Running well

could well be, still on agp 4 but have set all graphics to the minimum. Maybe i'll upgrade. It just really annoys me that they sel the game with a minimum spec that i meet and a recommended spec that i meet and it doesn't run properly. hey ho!

if it wasn't for games and uni work i'd still be using my P60 ;)

AMD, ugh. Let me say this, i've never had an AMD that has worked reliably and i've never had an Intel that hasn't. ;)

Got to disagree there I'm afraid. I have an AMD64 3000+ and it is as solid as a rock. I have been an Intel user for a long while, but this AMD is just far superior in terms of performance.

Many people blame their processor for poor system performance when it is more often the case that other hardware components, or a bad mixture of them, is actually to blame. And even more issues are "user difficulty" or poor housekeeping.

Even tho' I use my PC for games, I still maintain that consoles are the ideal format. No compatibility issues and better control systems :)

Still, it's just my humble opinion.

Rob

now i know you barking!!!

If consoles were better i would spend £200 on one instead of, well, i wouldn't like to admit how much i've spent on PC's!

I have a PS2 and i hate it, the PS1 was rubbish and so is the PS2. The graphics are terrible, all grainy and on driving games you just cannot tell what is happening to the track ahead. They are slow to load and the controls are AWFUL!!!

give me a keyboard and mouse any day!

BTW did you hear that some guy went to prison for sticking big hard drives in XBoxes, loading them with 80 games and selling them on the net. First ever aparantly.

Anyway, thats my opinion ;)

RUFF RUFF

Rob.. rrrr...got a spare 2200+ if you want it... or it could be a 2400+ ? ahh feck knows. lol.

My Sony Dual layer DVD+/- came today also - THE most expensive one I could find. hehe.

I forgot that Intel released the 3.06Ghz on the 533 and I didn't know about the 2.8.. I reckon most boards would need a bios flash though.

Ps. Funny isn't it - How when a PC question pops on this Bravo Forum, it instantly gets 20 replies - Yet if a car question came up, we'd just ignore it. lol.
