The 1000S in classifieds, anyone know anything about it? I see its an 88 on an E, is that one of those that runs on Leaded 4 star as they did during a period around 87, not sure when that finished though. I do know UL fuel will kill some FIRE engines.

I thought the Leaded FIRE engines would also run on UnLeaded

How does it affect it out of interest? I was thinking this the other day :)

Not the case, when the FIRE came out it was UL, then there was a batch in 87 and in 88 that were Leaded only, after that it went back to UL. I had one and it was a D and if you ran it on UL or even that LRP it was a dog. When 4 star did go it slowly started to die and was a pig to start etc. My garage had the chart which was from Fiat and said no to UL on a batch of FIRE engines.

So what is it that makes the fuel buggar the engine? Is it the lub in the fuel or the lack of combustion or something else

no idea, just different vale seats has to be fitted to most engines, so don't see how running on un leaded could show such difference straight away, apart from a bit of pinking:confused:

The old Dreg pinked immediately and within ays was slower and hard to start. Going back to Leaded improved it but by then it was just being phased out.
Im quite keen on the silver super, but bit worried about the head and I dont want to find out the hard way:)

unleaded fuels burn hotter than their older leaded equivalents and the older engines had valve seats that aren't as resistant to this extra heat and the seats burn away resulting in compression loss due to the valves being unable to seal can shag the camshaft in some cases too as the valves recess into there seats that aren't there anymore tappet gaps close up causing excess load and wear.

like dave says though seems strange that it had such a dramatic effect so quickly. Most older cars I have either accidently ran on unleaded or have been forced to just pinked and were a bit gutless but as soon as got some additive into it or some propper 4 star it was fine again.

Could get a head off a later unleaded panda and retrofit or have the head thats already on re-seated. Chances are though it will have been sorted allready unless it's been ran on lead replacement additives.

Just had look at the ad and agree with him he was stupid not to take £775 for it:nutter:

If I was to make offer on it I would drop in about £450 to £500 and thats only because its got a long mot on it.
