only thing with that D reg is the point that FIRE engines around that time are 4 star leaed fuel only. I know you can get additives etc, but in my experience of leaded FIRE engines they never run right on unleaded fuel.
what happened to the mint CLX btw?

Barry, I understood that the FIRE engine was designed from the outset to be used with unleaded fuel.

Steve, when the FIRE first came out yes it was unleaded. However there is a batch around 1986/76 that are leaded only. No idea why but the couple Ive driven and owned from that time hated the unleaded.

You don't happen to know what range of engine nos this batch covered do you? I sometimes wonder about my E reg. It generally runs well but it does tend to pink under heavier acceleration.

No, I don't have a strobe. I think I'd need one to check it on an '87 4x4? Is that right? I was thinking of asking to have this done when it goes in for the MOT.

blocked, not just disconected? that may be what wrong with my 750 then,

You have to block the pipe (small bolt etc) to the manifold whilst doing the timing or it won't run.

if you leave the pipe connected it's 15 deg BTDC

If you can get one that shows advance & retard angles then it will be easier, otherwise you will have to use the scale above the flywheel. Mine has a digital readout making it much easier with 2 & 4 stroke rpm but cost £150 about 15yrs ago
