Fantasia

As if I wouldn't persevere. I've used the choke and throttle linkage from the scrap Fantasia carb' and given the new one a good clean.

On the red Panda bonnet. What could...

...go...

...wrong?

It's going to be blue eventually anyway. ;)

Re: Fantasia

You never know..it's a nice car and wroth sorting I think..(y)

She is. That's the thing about small Fiats they become family members instead of cars.

1242cc MPi engine with a blown head gasket.

Swapped for two spare flywheels. :)

Hopefully that's the oil pump for the FrankenFiat engine and if anyone wants the MPi rail, 1242 block, head or sump (it's had a patch welded to it) let me know. ;)

Fantasia

I love these engines. It took forty minutes to strip the MPI engine back to a block and sump, then it took an hour and a half to prize the sump away from the Tiger Seal holding the bloody thing on. I turned the crank a couple of times and as well as having the correct pick up pipe the little oil that was left positively spewed out.

I'd run out of light to fit the newest carb' to the Fantasia but she's not going anywhere in the near future so there's no rush. Three day and three night shifts so the earliest I can get back to it is Wednesday.

If you or if you know anyone who needs or wants any bits they're all on eBay...

...if not they'll be binned next time I have a clearout. ;)

Transition day so I've managed some Pandaing. :)

First I fitted carb' number four to the Fantasia and all went well until I tried to start her. No matter how many times I primed the fuel pump it wouldn't run for more than a couple of seconds. So I added the FrankenFiat pump inline...

...once the new car was full of fuel the old girl started and ran fairly well. So I took the electric pump off and let it run with the mechanical pump and a bit of choke and the as I touched the throttle she bogged again exactly the same as before. So I now have two carb's with the same problem or a knackered fuel pump. When I get a new fuel pump I'll fit a one way valve as well as a new filter so the car isn't starved every time I park on the wonk.

Speaking of the FrankenFiat engine I wanted to fit the new oil pump and get started putting the thing back together. I knew this would happen...

...my plan was to replace the internals from the knackered oil pump with the mechanism from the working one.

Bugger. I forgot the crank ends were different sizes.

This means I'll have to either buy a new oil pump (with money I don't have or will have in the foreseeable future) or use the 1242cc block. What I'm going to loose in capacity and torque the finished article should make up for in higher rpm and possibly horse power. The problem is all my calculation for the carb' jetting and inlet manifold length was based on the bigger block. For it to balance out now the manifold needs to be 18mm shorter. This is something I don't need to worry about yet as I have to get the new block together first. As it's an 8V block the cylinders are flat, with the 866 cam' this now means the engine has lost it's non-interference reliability so I need to make certain the belts are properly aligned and fit for purpose. Another irritation as well as stripping the engine at the weekend being futile is the only part of the engine that's been bid on is the thermostat and water pump. Luckily the 1360 one fits and is a lot newer than the one that's for sale. I'll be running the engine without a 'stat anyway.

So this is...

...is as far as I've got today. I may get more done tomorrow if I can. :)

Day two of the rebuild (taking a while to let the seal set and between shifts) and now the seal between the water pump and block has set I've tightened that, refitted the oil pump and cleaned the Tiger seal off the edges.

As for the sump...

fZg1f4yn.jpg

...it's a mess and I'll probably look at re-welding the patch that looks like it was done while the sump was on the car.

iftYUiO5.jpg

Hmmmm, could the flash burning of the oil in the sump when it was welded caused a localised channel of smoke resulting in the head gasket failure?

Nah; it was probably just knackered. ;)

So I'd like to start today by thanking someone who said this...

...would be impossible. :)

Punto GT rear brake on a Panda. There is a minor alteration required as the handbrake mechanism fouls the shock when the car is elevated.

tmRmQFqd.jpg

There are two ways around this. Move the shock mounting point, possibly with a coilover set up to allow the standard handbrake location on the caliper or; make a new bracket for the caliper itself. With the cable mounting on the Omega arm this would be easier and I could even use the standard Panda cable to actuate the handbrake. Either method is relatively straight forward and both have advantages and disadvantages so it will probably come down to time and cost as usual. ;)

So why am I pillocking about with the brakes today? Well there has been a lot of Panda activity lately with links to what the Japanese are up to and other modified Pandas taking the world stage. With the weather looking decidedly tropical I thought about paint, with paint I need to think about wheels, with wheels I need to think about brakes and all things being considered I need to see if I need to widen the arches.

GGjPxzBQ.jpg

JxLPtxwU.jpg

That would be a no then. ;)

There's even enough room inside the wheel arch without any spacers and standard Punto bolts.

6qQxNxNr.jpg

Unlike the time I tried these wheels on my Fantasia it even clears the handbrake cable.

So good news then. Let's try the front.

Looking good so far...

GZgDL5Mz.jpg

...oh bum! Still not as much of a problem as it looks. All I need to do is make a pair of mounting plates for when I swap the bottom bearings over.

This bit...

YCcRQORU.jpg

...how hard could it be? ;)

hey thats nice... just please paint it all up before you fit it >_<

hmmm the back brakes look like they would fit strait swap on a panda 4x4 as they dont have the dampener mounting points in that position. wonder if the bolt patten is all the same.

some thing i need to keep my eyes open for..
very informative.. :D
