Now I know that both 1.3 versions of these cars have 70 ponies for the Panda and 90 for the GP.

My question is what is the difference that makes these 20 more horse?

Management stuff or physical engine mcgubbins?

throttle body differences are often a factor, but the ecu maps are likely to be the main difference. in theory it wont be hard at all to convert the panda to 90bhp. in the past i've swapped throttle bodies and ecu's on a 1.8 escort to get from 115hp spec to 130hp, everything else was identicle on the engines.

the difference is clear. and a huge difference. the 70/75 bhp mjtd has a fixed geometry turbo where as the 90bhp mjtd has a variable geometry turbo aka VGT.(y)

What they said (y)

Going a bit off-topic, but what geometry varies in the turbo? It's all fixed pretty solidly (apart from the bearings) isn't it?
I think I read somewhere that the Panda had less horses because the gearbox was weaker...

I read on Italiaspeed last week about a new 75bhp version to be combined with a dualogic gearbox revision I think for the Panda.

Fiat want to produce a reliable engine, that will last years in standard tune. Remapping obviously allows it to create more power, torque and/or cut fuel usage, emissions, but is likely to reduce the life of an engine. Of course, any modern engine should last for hundreds of thousands of miles, even fairly poorly serviced. By having a different turbo Fiat can maintain the relaibility while giving more power etc.

Nice to see the 1.3 in the Idea is now 90bhp

variable vanes turbos- at lower speeds vanes open up in the turbo to blow in more air. As the speed increases the vanes close so less air goes in per rev - vanes are spinning faster remenber so you dont want to blow the top of your engine. Therefore more power at lower revs.

My Marea JTd had a leak in the vacuum chamber which regulates the opening of the vanes and i was getting an overboost error as when i hit 3000rpm they were still open under certain conditions

cheers

That's what I heard... It's been tuned down for the gearbox...
