Hi

I have a Fiat Panda 4x4 old model (1993-4 I think), originally bought in Switzerland so a left-hand drive, which is on its last legs (piston's gone).

It used to be my Dad's car until he died 2 years ago and I took it to the UK (Manchester).

It's now at a garage in Cholrton, Manchester, and the guy told me it's gotta be scrapped, but I was wondering whether anyone here is interested in it for parts and stuff. I'd prefer the parts to live on in the hands of people who have a passion for those little things, hence me writing here (the original idea was to keep it on the road as long as possible in memory of my father but I have to accept evidence and surrender now).

It's got 275000 km on it but some parts have been changed, obviously. It can't be put back on the road or at least not easily as it's registered abroad so you'd have to import it first, etc. - plus insurance for left-hands is always higher so not sure it'd be a good idea anyway. So it's gotta be towed away - you can't drive it.

If you are interested let me know, [email protected] or 07751-639478, the guy at the garage is waiting for me to go today and do something about it, I may be able to convince him to tow it back home or give me a few more days... offers should therefore be quick, pls get in touch if you are interested!

What would you prefer...giving it away to be restored or just selling it off for parts. If the pistons are gone an engine swap would take less than a day and be about £80.

Could you also let people Know what you want for it as unseen no pics will mean next to nothing and if you would prefer it restored I'm sure that many here would be more than happy to accept a new project LHD or not.

I got the impression it was free... :)

as long as it found a good home...

did they fit injection to the later 4x4 models?

Hi

sorry for being vague in my first post...

unfortunately I don't have a pic, but I can confirm it's got injection.

i have to say i didn't realise it could be restored cheaply, could you tell me more, i.e. do you mean it would be put back on the road (considering it's not registered or imported here, i.e. would anybody go the length of importing it officially, insuring it etc.?) (sorry, I am bit of a newbie)

i am open to suggestions really, and as for price, as i said if i know that it's going to be put to good use and you can pick it up and tow it away i'd probably give it for free - or am I a fool? the guy at the garage offered £25 :(

in any case i think i will try to convince the guy to tow it back to my place, seeing as there is some interest here. that would give me time to take a picture of it and post it here etc.

thanks to all for your help,

andy

you'd get much more than that for the engine and gear box transmission alone... an injection 4x4 is incredibly rare in the UK.

as for getting it back on the road it can probably be done for less than £100 not including registering it for the UK roads if needed. i'm sure you can dig up some of the costs by visiting the DVLA website... or just searching around.

Thanks for the additional info, it's v appreciated especially because as I said I'd like to keep the Panda going if possible (my mother and I originally decided we would like to treat the car as vintage from now on and do what we can to keep it going - but costs are a problem for me) - plus having owned Pandas for nearly all my life I, like you, am a fan (albeit without all the tech knowledge you guys have - hats off to that!).

Re: engine size and other details, please bear with me - I have managed to stall the scrapping process and should be able to tow it back home Monday or so, and when I do I will collect all the details and post them here for advice or offers (including offers for restoration if possible/appropriate here).

Just one question: Alan mentioned £80 and Tony £100 to get it back on the road - forgive my ignorance but are you talking total cost of the operation (engine swap) or just the work excluding the cost of the engine? (I told you I was a newbie... I hope I'll be able to give something back in exchange for all your help!)

The prices we quote are for hardware only... engines, gaskets sets... that sort of thing... the rest is DIY generally in my case as yours a cry for help often is greeted with an answer.

First things first... you need to work out the simple stuff... logisitics... where are you based ?... not far from Chorley i guess. next question who would be prepared to travel to that location, and thirdly do you have access to a working space... (a large roofed garage is best i am told... not the carpark that i use :) )?

you also need a good/reliable prognosis of the problems ahead.
you say it's got a holed piston then you will need either a new piston (plenty available sometimes for free... infact i have a spare 1108 engine which may or may not have a warped manifold which you can have for free... it's probably full of water but it's got 4 good pistons. or you need a donor engine... easy enough to source from breakers yards.

find a problem and it can be solved with a little work and a lot of good will and cups of tea/coffee.

Replacement engine will be about £80 and will take less than a day to fit but need your location if you want to strip it down & replace pistons on a 200k engine ok but will take much longer & good chance something else will go with the milage being so high. Then the DVLA thing, Then a going over before looking at getting it MOT'd, then you get tax, then off you go.

If you want to keep it for centimental reasons or just cause you are a fan of these cars we can help, It may take a little time but there is no where better to ask.

I have an idea re the DVLA thing so will PM

Hi all

thanks again for all the info.

I am posting some pics I made this morning, including the chassis plate and the registration document with specs etc. Yes, it's 1108cc.

If restoration is possible, I'd be very interested. From your comments I gather that it would be best to swap the engine rather than work on the piston. Does anybody here have an engine to offer, or any pointers to sympathetic breakers in the South Manchester area? (but all of Mcr would do too if necessary)

Regarding location and doing the work, as I said I am in Chorlton (South Manchester), and I have a roofed garage which unfortunately is a bit narrow on the sides, but there should be plenty of space at the front.

Although I have a Porters manual for the car :) there is no way I could even consider doing any work on this myself, but I'd be happy to assist whoever is doing it, and also provide those all important cups of tea/coffee - plus I can also throw in some good Italian food ;)

Seriously, let me know if you are interested and at what conditions and let's take it from there.

Thanks again to all for your help - this feels like a nice community!

Andy

PS: hope the pics are attached properly...

oops, here they are hopefully

forgot to add that it's a Country Club model

it looks very nice... cetainly not a restoration job... it just needs fixing. A restoration job is when you need to start welding things together to get it back on the road.

the country club has got the 4x4 embossed on the tail gate... nice touch. I also see it's in the metalic red which is also quite rare up to 92 you could only get that colour on a Sisley i believe, but it doesn't have those essential headlight washer jets.

I can sell you an engine but it has a perfectly good panda selecta wrapped around it :), with the exceptionof the gearbox... which is evil. I do have a spare sitting in my parking area which i could do with shifting to be honest... the condition isn't great though, and would only recommend using it if you were to get a full strip down for the pistons etc... but that would be free to anyone.

That's a lovely little Panda, it would be such a shame to scrap it, especially as it's a later injected car.

One thing about the guys on here, if you're genuine and need help you'll get it.

Just to note as well, if you were to break it for parts, the inclinometer would fetch around £50, the roofrack would fetch closer to £80, the rear hatch with the 4X4 stamped into it would be worth a few quid as well. The guy in the garage probably knew this hence his offer to buy it.

Reregistering it in the UK should be straight forward enough, a call to DVLA would set you straight regarding the procedure and cost. Finally, insuring a LHD car isn't a great deal more expensive, especially if you insure it as a classic. Panda 4X4s are now eligible for classic insurance.

Thats a fantastic looking panda, i love the embossed 'panda' in the tailgate . I hope the car is now tucked up in the garage :).
I doubt it... i suspect that's where it was dropped off by the gagrage owner... and unless someone is feeling limber i doubt it has moved since.
