Hi guys, about 6 months ago i carried out a routine service on my partners 1.2 500 (2009).

On taking the number 3 cylinder plug out i found the ceramic on the top of the plug damaged, i then spent a few hours trying my very best to clear the area of any ceramic and run the engine over without plugs in the hope that it would get rid of any ceramic that may possibly have got into the cylinder.

All went well and the engine ran fine...phew.

A few weeks ago the eml came on, the card idled badly and limits at about 4-4.5k RPM, which i assume is some sort of safe mode with certain obd codes?

Anyway. i got my scanner on the car and found fault code p0016 crankshaft.

I gave the car a quick check over and found that one of the ignition leads wasnt connecting well so have replaced the full set, issue remains. The backbox is also blowing slightly.

Are there any common issues that would put up this code i.e is either the cam/crank sensor a common fault? Could the blowing exhaust really be causing the fault?

Or....am i to suspect the worst and wonder whether the ceramic has somehow knocked the timing out? (i dont actually know if any got into the cylinder though).

Any help or guidance to possible causes would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi, and welcome, :)

the Fault code will be related to a sensor detecting a fault.. of which "possible" low compression on 1 cylinder will not feature,;)

sounds like a mis-match between the Crank and Cam sensors data,

you can reset it with Multi-ECU Scan if necessary - save dealer charges:rolleyes:

did you clear the fault code.. how long until it re-appeared??,

Thanks, ill give disconnecting and cleaning up the connections a try. Do you know the location of the cam sensor? I have found the crank, but couldnt see the cam when i was noseying around.

As for the odometer, i think it has done about 6k since the plugs were changed.

I cant believe i forgot to add this as well...,

One of the first things i checked when the light came on was the plugs, and the no3 plug was damaged, the insulation around the electrode. I can only assume there was something left in the cylinder that has damaged this, but i have run the car for around 100miles since then as i have intermittently tried to get my laptop to read the car and rechecked the plug and it is ok since being replaced again. Maybe it was just coincidence? I sure hope so. I cannot imagine that it was though and i just hope it is ok now and whatever was in here has been obliterated and sent out of the exhaust.

When i sort out this issue i will be pressure testing and bore scoping to look into that one further. But for the minute im not too worried, its not the issue i do not think, unless it has somehow put the timing out.

Yes. It turned out that the timing of the engine was out by two teeth so the timing belt was replaced and the timing reset to how it should be with timing tools from fiat.

the car then drove perfectly

Whether this was caused by the plug insulation in the cylinder or not I am not sure.

I've had belts jump before,
sometimes a sign of a dodgy waterpump / tensioner bearing,

thankfully the older FIRE engines are "SAFE" = non-interference..,

Do you mean the 8 valve Fire engines? The 16 valve gets damaged?

hi ive got the same code
i have a fiat grande punto 1.4 16v 6 speed manual 2007 57 plate and have a misfire at idle and revs to about 5k i have fault code p0016 camshaft problem i have changed the ECU/ lock set cam sensor twices, had the timing checked and told it ok any other ideas if i disconnect the camshaft sensor when running it make on differences cheer Craig :worship:

Glad its sorted..
who said timing was fine..??

Local garage Rev's in Ammanford very disappointed with them told me they had checked it but don't think you can check these engine with out removing the belt? I phoned L C motor in Newport (very helpful) told me it would be 1 1/2 hours work to check the timing but advised me it was only 2 hour to change the belt so told me to go to local fiat dealer and get it change as the car had done 80k and belt should be changed at 72k and be careful as if the belt had sliped or streched i was on borowed time if it snaps unsafe head and then bring it back to them if the light was still on but they didn't think it would be

Hi, just wondering if anyone can help me out? I have a 1.2 grande punto active and changed the spark plugs and ht leads this morning. Since changing them the car is missing really badly, I have checked the new leads and they are fitting well! Could the problem be the coil pack as it happend the last time I changed the leads and plugs????
