Well had my thermo on for a few weeks now and the car overheated at the services yesterday pi**ing water from the expansion tank... Noticed the fan didn't kick in when above normal running temp, i have checked the fuse's and all seem ok.....

is there a way to check if the fan switch is duff and is this most probably the case...

is the fan switch on the back of the rad? does it have a blue/brown wire connectors coming from it and held in by 2x screw/bolt (back of rad on left side 1.8 hlx)

MOD'S please could you title this post with Overheated - Fan not working.

Cheers

Re: Untitled

I had the exact same problem with my 1.2 in exactly the same circumstances. My problem was I had a Mk 1 radiator on a MK 2 car. Difference was the Mk 2 ecu controls the switch. Was ok but somebody had wired it wrong. Have you got a yellow sheathed cable going to the switch on rad?

Chasing the same problem on my MK2 HGT. What I understand to be the procedure for the fan operation is..The ECU gets info from two coolant sensors on the engine then sends signals to operate the relay set (metal box in front of battery) which turns the fan to half speed or full speed.
At half speed the component attached to the radiator is a big muckle resistor (sited there for cooling) is in circuit. At full speed the resistor is no longer in circuit.

Check connections at relay set,and use contact lube. High current connections don't need much crud to stop them working. Then check resistor is still intact, the resistor in mine fell apart when withdrawn. Will be fitting the new resistor tomorrow, I'll let you know if it is succesful.
