Was driving down the M40, engine temperature light came on then went off after around 2 minutes, car drove terrible and was making a grinding noise. Pulled over and opened the bonnet, water tank was loosing a lot of water through the top. Anyway, I let it cool down and drown to the next services and called the AA and he checked it over and did what it says below.

Anyway, he took these parts out, he said something along the lines of its part of the thermostat and taking it out would stop it over heating which it did, I drove home no problems at all.

Firstly he suggested getting it checked over, is he just covering his back or should I get it checked over?

Also do you think I could still drive around without this part until I get it replaced, it wouldn't be a great distance, only 10 minutes drives for a couple of days.

Thank you.

Its the actual working part of the thermostat he's taken out.

I guess the overheating light is coloured red, know what I mean.

He's managed to get it driveable but if the temperature drops the car won't heat up and will be using too much fuel, leading to bore wash.

Short journeys will be worse.

Do try and get it resolved asap.

Cheers
