OT Whys my comp runnin real slow?

Its defragged regualary, virus and spyware checked regualary, and i try not to put loads of crap on it, but latly its slowed right down,
Any ideas what i can do to sort it out,#

AMD Sempron 2600 running at 1.83 ghz
556 DDR Ram (crucial)
120 gig HDD 40 gig used,
No graphics card as yet!

Open up the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and see what percentage processor usage you have when it is running slow and see what programs are running in the background. This may help you identify a particular program that is dragging the system down.

Also, click Start > Run and type in the box "msconfig" (without the " ") and check the startup list and see if any rogue programs are starting up.

This place is a good source of info about rogue files that can cause issues.

I would get a spyware checker, ad-aware is pretty good. It'll find all those crappy progs that websites download to your P.C without asking.

Also go into internet options and turn off the active x thang. there are 3 options. yes no and prompt, set them all to prompt. It's a pain in the bum as a lot of sites require active x to be turned on, trouble is some of the not so reputable websites use active x to download tracking software to your P.C without asking

SP2 is installed,
Just bought a cheapish (40) graphics card an ATI ASUS (128mb ddr) this has helped a hell of a lot.
I`ll try that active X,
i`ve got spy bot for adware seems ok.

XP has check disk (error checker) inherrited from good old windows NT.

I used scandisk once and it cocked my machine up why was win 98 released????

the reason why i asked if you have SP2 installed is cos there's a new virus which attacks XP users with SP2...

i read it in this weeks computer weekly!

It's a Phel Trojan which is distributed as a .html file. The main effect of the trojan is to cause an overall degradation in performance on the infected machine.

This would be spot on for what you're suffering from!!

Cos Microsoft are so shite, they haven't made a patch for it yet, but Symantec have!

Spyware, as previously mentioned.
Ad-aware was recomended.
Spybot Search and Destroy should be used also. It finds things Ad-aware misses and vice versa.
