About feckin' time ! It never ceases to amaze me how many tw@ts think that because it is "daylight" hours, they don't have to put their lights on in poor visibility conditions. And how many drivers feel it appropriate to drive around with fog lights blazing when it's clear as a bell, but feck me, when the weather actually demands the use of proper lighting, they turn the buggers off !!

Grrrr !!

It's summit that really annoys me too Ask kate

A lady once told me... who was told by her husbands who's a copper... if it's dark enough for sidelights it's dark enough for dipped beam.

I dunno about anyone else but i'd like everyone to see my car when driving about esp as I have a black car!!

People use to lagh a Volvo's where their light always on.... well atlest you could see the buggers!!!!

By 2011 we wont be able to afford to run a vehicle, I for one will be riding around Glasgow on a skateboard pulled by a couple of goats...how long before I get taxed on carrots and have to fit sidelights to them??

I thought goat drawn skateboards were already the norm in Glasgae ?!?! ;)

nooooooooooo, it's hamster drawn rollerskates, I just fncy a bit more oomph.

just as well my mums leaving the country to live in cyprus. She always complains that i drive with my sidelights on all the time, and use dipped beam just because there are clouds in the sky...She's right, i do, but now everyone will, muhahahahaaaa

I have my sidelights on permanently and might be seen as being over-cautious by putting my dipped beam on if a sparrow flies in front of the sun!

I really like Audi's LED set-up on their newer cars.

It was only ever going to be a matter of time before this came about....it's too much like common sense as far as I'm concerned and a damn site better than most motoring legislation that comes out.....

On the subject of Audi's....

Those LED's looked the mutt's when they first came out...now they just get on my tits!!!!

Was great when they were first on the R8, A5... now you get them on bog standard A4's on the school run....NNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

re

i dont think its a bad thing,

as for Audi DRL's they were cool, but have been put in the chav box with lexus lights now.

I'm all for it. I always had the Bravs on dipped. It was easier to leave the ligfhts on as they auto shut off when you turned the ignition off.

Both Bravs seemed to be some type of stealth vehicle where pedestrians/other vehicles would just jump out in fornt as the car seemed to be invisible.

There are soooooo many different weather conditions that require them on. Motorway driving into the sun when the sun is low is also another. Rear lights are just soo much easier to see.

Makes no odds if your lights are on in normal conditions, everyone just thinks you drive a Volvo :) All for it.

Yet another half-arsed regulation, I fear.

It would have been much better safety wise if they proposed that all, (harder to see) motorcycles/mopeds used headlights, making them stand-out more from all the other larger traffic.

If you can't see a 1.5M-2M wide car, (in any sort of daylight) then you're not safe to be on the road yourself.

Totally agree with Carroll.

Yet more nannystate intervension replacing common sense.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but where do you draw the line between what is better for us and what is not?

At the same time why not make mandatory :-

All cars to be painted Day Glo Orange
All drivers to wear Hi Viz clothing
All drivers to have head mounted flashing yellow light
All drivers to have flashing bright LED's in shoe heels
All cars to be equipped with automatic 120dB audio warning device sounding every 30 seconds
All car ECU's restricting speed to less than 20 mph
GPS controlled braking systems operated by Big Brother.

:)

I too aggree with Carroll. But what do you expect from the EU? They even drive on the wrong side of the road

To Carroll, MG, and coward (oops, i meant anon)

1998 - Compulsory daytime headlights proposed by PACTS
1999 - New Highway Code published - suggests daytime lights

Ad...Since about 2004 i think, most of the more responsible manufacturers such as Honda, have made the dipped headlight come on with the ignition, with no way to switch it off other than turning the ignition off.

Why don't you move to continental Europe, say Germany, where they legislate more against motorcycles. That should make you happy. (i wouldn't shed a tear ;) )

I was under the impression that all bikes now had headlights that come on with the ignition. The two newest we have, a Suzuki and a Triumph, both have headlights that come on with the ignition.

As for hard to see, a friend, riding a bright green bike, wearing a white helmet and a red oversuit because it was raining, with the headlight on, still had the blind **** pull out in front of him and say 'sorry mate, didn't see ytou'.

Don't get me started............

bit of info for you all regarding daytime lights :)
Austria actually trialed this for 2yrs -this January they scrapped the compulsory law as fatalities had soared by 12%- since the withdrawl they have now dropped by over 5% and motorbike accidents now down 25%.
2007 -poland and the Czech Rep.tried this and fatalities rose by over 17%.Bulgaria increased too..only spain that doesnt require daytime lights reduced!

So theres food for thought :)
