OT: Damn, wrong media

Well thats typical...

I'm in the process of building a new PC from scratch.

Went out and got a version of Vista Ultimate that was oem. I was under the impression ultimate came both with 32 and 64 bit versions. Turns out mine is only 32 bit. Joy.

Anyone know if its possible to obtain or purchase a 64 bit DVD? I have the key and license sticker so its literally the Ultimate 64 bit media I need. I would ideally like an original disc.

I've had a look online but can't really find much.

As a few on here are in IT, do you have any pointers please? Ta!

i have a full vista 64 bit dvd offering all 64 bit vista suite. i chose ultimate, but pro and home and another is on my disc. + i have an easy way to crack oem too !!

lol, I haven't ran pirate OS in years, I'm considering the move to 64bit OS but there's no motivation at the moment.

Any Vista Ultimate 64bit disc will work with your serial. Serials are not paired to the disc. So you could borrow one, use a pirated version or buy an original disc but you'll prob end up paying for another serial with the disc aswell.

I don't use a serial ?*! (hackers secret)

I run a duel boot system. xp32 pro on one drive, and vista ultimate 64 on another drive.
AMD athlon 64.

Personally, besides incompatable drivers for older preferals and games like BattlefieldII don't work the only benifit I have seen, is well-NOTHING ! though my music sounds are better (creative X-FI) when running true 64 bit, and i can increase the bit rate of playback. big deal.

Try calling Microshaft?  Advise them that you have a valid serial and they may be able to provide you with a link on their site to download

Unfortunately only the Retail version of ultimate entitles you to both 32bit & 64bit variations. As you have bought the OEM version I very much doubt Microsoft will entertain you in providing 64bit without paying the full price for it.

Think I've managed to get an image iso through a torrent.

As long as my key works with it, I should be fine.

The PC I'm building for myself is coming along, just have a couple of minor things needed, just sussing out whats what and then I'll get them either from ebuyer or ebay

Microsoft Vista Ultimate (64bit hopefully!)

Just need to get:

Graphics card
PC3-12800 rated DDR3 memory

The system will not be used for gaming so the graphics need not be anything special, so I'll probably get a 9800GT or even a 9600GSO. Depends whats about.

As for memory, think I might go for some OCZ sticks (6Gb).

You might well argue that and I can see what you are both saying.

The rational behind the i7 is that on the last computer I built was some 5-6 years ago. Even now its holding its own - still fast, responsive and very reliable.

If quality components are used, the O/S and applications are installed with thought (rather than just slapping any old thing on) then it will stand the test of time.

I was looking at a Q6600 which seems to be around the £154 mark, an Asus mobo at about £140 and then the memory. The i7 was only £30 more, the motherboard £50 more and memory I think works out to be about £30 more. So for the sake of £110, it didn't seem to make sense skimping.

If my thinking changes within 12 months and I wish to play games (which is unlikely but you never know) then I've got the option to upgrade the GPU knowing that everything else is capable.

Having been mocked as a teenager for have a lowly 486 DX2 66 and then a Cyrix P150+ which were behind the times when I got them, I vowed never to have a system that could be mocked again Some circa 15 years later, the behemoths stand firm against criticism.

Yes its an overkill, but thats just me - if I'm going to do something, it has to be comprehensively over the top

Thanks to all who offered help, I've managed to get a working torrent file download which worked with my key.

Went with 6GB PC3-12800 Corsair memory and a Gainward Golden Sample 9800GT (1GB) in the end.

Just been building it tonight. Vista has gone on fine so its happy days!
