I put Night breaker Plus bulbs in the 500s high beam about 2years ago and they are still going. However, I put a pair in our Megane for dipped beam, and one blew within 2 months, so I probably wouldn't use them again. Good light while they last, though.

I looked at the data sheets for a few of the OSRAM H7 bulbs. The nightbreakers burn out more quickly but have the same light output as the others. I could never tell any difference when I put them in my car. Do they know something they're not telling us?

OSRAM nightbreaker, output 1500lm lifespan 150-250h
OSRAM original line, output 1500lm lifespan 330-550h
OSRAM ultra life, output 1500lm lifespan 700-1100h

Been reading this thread with interest.

When we first bought our Clio brand new in 2001, I was rather disappointed with the full beam performance. I bought some 100w halogens.

The headlights are twin-headlamps ie the dipped beam comes out of one lens, and the full beam out of the other lens.

The full beam was transformed!
95,000miles on the clock, and the full beam 100w bulbs are still absolutely fine.

Regards,
Mick.

There is a website called powerbulbs that are giving 20% discount in December so you can get Phillips X-treme Vision +130 H1 & H7, so 2 x main and 2 x dipped and they throw in a free set of 5W side bulbs. Free P&P and a 12 month guarantee or £45.12.

Does that sound like a good deal?

On a high beam that's only used for short amounts of time you'll get away with it, still not legal though....

Even in spot lights 100W bulbs are illegal to use on the road, fine if you like off-roading your Clio

And the extra draw will stress the wiring causing the insulation to break down but not quite enough to blow the 10A fuse

I had night breakers didn't last long at all and although brighter not worth paying the extra for

I have had this conversation before on Piston Heads. There is no maximum wattage level on main, dipped or spot lights in the UK only a minimum level.

Thanks.

As far as I know, wattage isn't the issue these days, it's brilliance or lumens or whatever. You can have stupidly bright LEDs consuming minimal wattage.

Full beam is used LOTS of times round here on the rural lanes at night. No street lights, few vehicles. For the past nearly 14years we have had no issues whatsoever. MOTs passed, no wires burnt out, no relays blown, and all has been absolutely fine with 100w halogens.

Mick
