I drive a 2.0ie SX SW. Its on a K plate and drives OK. I've noticed as the engine gets warmer, there are flat spots when accelerating. I used to have a Cav SRI andused Optimax in that. It worked fine. Does anybody know,or are there Tempra owners using this petrol if Optimax will be safe in this type of engine.

shell petrol is a load of arse if you ask me. i have 2 petrol stations within about 500 metres of my house... Total and Shell. I always use total and my car cinq has no flat spots and is very very responsive. the other day i needed to goto the shell station because they have a cash machine aswell and so i decided to fill up as i was just about to run empty. I used there standard unleaded... the car had little acceleration in 4th and 5th and had a flat spot in 2nd and could hardly get up minor hills. filled up on total again and it was back to normal.

never using shell again unless i really have to. I find BP is the same

Hmmm, interesting comments.

I live near a Total garage and two shell garages. I can't stand Total fuel. Use Shell diesel solely in my Fiat Ulysse [180 bhp, nearly], and Shell optimax in my Mondeo 2.0l - I am sure we have another old thread going on about this!

BUT I know sometimes you can get a bad batch of fuel. I have also used BP Ultimate, and loved that as well. One moral of the story is NEVER EVER use supermarket fuel.

I alway's use tesco petrol without any problem at all, its all in your mind:D

Hmmm, maybe, unless you get a supermarket petrol supplier whose tanker driver has been paid NOT to put the additives in - known fact!

Not in my mind - acceleration in my Mondeo on optimax, red lined accordingly, is a lot smoother than on cheap fuel. 76k mileage on it proves it [car actually has 128k on clock, not all mine] - when I have to bung a tenner of Total fuel in, I pull my hair out.

Obviously depends how you drive a car, and also local supplier. Not all local fuel is the same, whatever the branding.

I use Total fuel and it's fine. I tried Optimax for three fills and the Stilo didn't like it. I'm yet to try BP Ultimate but I will do soon.

Optimax makes a slight difference to my Punto; the engine becomes a little more responsive and smoother. It tends to stay like that for a while after using Optimax, so I fill up with the stuff every few weeks and use normal cheap petrol in between. Oh, and supermarket fuel is the same stuff as sold in "branded" petrol stations - but cheaper!

shell optimax, pura and v-power are a load of arse, if you want to clean your engine, use 10kboost or a petrol additive

My car uses either Esso plain (the cheapest station inCarlisle doesn't do posh petrol) or Asda, both of which it is happy enough with. I don't know if it's the way I drive it but it does seem to run smoother on posh petrol (yer Esso 97 ron stuff).

And Bushboy, maybe your car got upset because you ran it to almost emp-er-ty and stirred up all the gunk at the bottom of the tank?

helz, i always run it to nearly empty on total... infact ive been driving around for the last 2 days with the light on... the metre hardly even rises at the moment when u turn it on and its driving perfect. infact its alot nippier on the empty tank (for obvious reason)

stuart_ash, you do realise that your ECU has now basically adjusted for the Optimax (higher octane) fuel?, and so when you put a lower octane fuel the mixture is too lean and thus poor preformance.

Anyways, from previous threads... Higher octane fuel generally only makes a difference on VVT engines. Other cars will notice a difference for a few hundred miles and then it'll feel normal again as the ECU makes the mixture adjustment.
Now the above does have a flaw... if using higher octane fuel means the mixture is made leaner, surely that means less fuel being used per mile? IOW, better mpg? I dunno...

For the record, I always fill up on Shell normal unleaded because it's a good quality fuel (makes the octane "grade" comfortably). Shell also as it's the cheapest I know of (72.7-74.7 pence/ltr) on the famous A41 petrol roundabout!

heheheh... you people and your cinq's. REAL cars suffer from fuel starvation for anything below 2 thirds of a tank.

Hi,

I realise that my other non-Fiat car is now optimax compliant - that is why it doesn't like other fuel, and probably why I then lose out not only in performance but economy as well.

If I am not in the mood for optimax, I try and just put Shell normal in it. Also only ever run the Ulysse on Shell diesel. I prefer detergents in my fuel!!!
