after all the fun we had a few years ago doing this:

chas an i decided to work a little closer to home....my garage and back drive to b precise. after years of sitting on his drive was time to get stuck into ripping the mk2 a new one...as i was sorting the pandas suspension out, chas cracked on, and when i arrived back about 1pm, found this:

It would've been possible to save it but to be honest the welding required would've cost more than the car was worth. The inner sills to floor pan had also gone, so despite it looking very shiny on the outside it was quietly festering away on the inside.

But fear not, many of it's parts are going to good use! The doors will fit my mk1 70SX so I will be keeping them as spares (and possibly replacing the rusted front passenger door). And a lot will be going towards a proposed 16v FIRE project that I've been threatening for some time. ;)
 
It's midnight, I'm knackered and every muscle in my body aches. I'm getting too old for this kind of thing! However, as Jai has already started the thread with pictures I'll add a few of my own.

The story goes like this. Back in 2007 I hankered after a mk1 70SX Uno and missed out on buying two. Thinking I was never going to get one this black mk2 70SX turned up on Ebay so I thought I'd try the later model as surely I'd never find a decent mk1 SX. The black 70SX was acquired for not a lot (the transport back to Watford cost as much as I paid for the car :rolleyes:) and with no tax or MOT. I knew it needed some welding but didn't know quite how much it needed...

Looks nice in black and with the funky blue interior with BLUE CARPET!

At the time I was running my 1986 Uno 45S that had been pressed back into service after the Cinq Soleil I'd bought wrecked its gearbox. I had to fix the Cinq before December 2007, which was when the Uno 45S's MOT ran out, and then with the Cinq back on the road I could get down to sorting the mk2 70SX. So by Xmas 2007 I was driving the repaired Cinq, the Uno 45S was resting and I turned my thoughts to fixing up the black mk2 70SX.

However, browsing through Ebay at the dawn of 2009 I found this...

A late model mk1 70SX, on sale local to me, MOT'd and with only 35K on the clock. It was too good a chance to miss so suddenly my plans changed again. They changed even more when I examined the black 70SX with a view to repairing it to MOT standards and selling it on because I found out just how rusty it was underneath.

Lots more where that came from so I considered selling it on as a project/ spares car. Thinking for a bit I then realised that it could yield a lot of parts for my mk1 70SX and also the project I want to do with my 45S. I would've had to go and buy another mk2 Uno SPi if I'd sold this so I decided that it would be better to strip this one for parts.

Jai very kindly offered to let me use his garage and the back of his house to do the strip down along with assisting me with the cannibalisation. So at the beginning of this week I pulled off all the easily removable part at my house and then one fine (St. George's) day the black 70SX is loaded up onto a trailer to head to Jai's.

Within a couple of hours or so most of the panels had been removed.

And by the end of the day there was little left other than a rolling shell.

A bit of T-Cut and it'll be as good as new :p

Now I (we including Jai!) have a stack load of parts. Hopefully the wings, bonnet and tailgate will go to some mk2 owners for a few pennies, as will the seats/ interior. Dashboard, centre console and SX instruments with tacho have also been removed to go to other mk2 owners. If not they will have to be taken to the council tip as both me and Jai are rapidly running out of storage space.

Tomorrow will bring new challenges as the shell will hopefully give up suspension, brakes, front cross member, rear beam and fuel tank. While we're at it we'll take out the wiring loom as well. There won't be much left by the time we've finished with it!

My fingers are sore and my body aches. Better get to bed to build up some strength for tomorrow...

A good fun project there :) I did a similar thing recently. I bought a mk1 Uno 70 for NZ$100 (about 35 pounds) and promised my wife that it would be gone within a week :)

The car was in OK condition, but the cam belt had broken and there was rust around the windscreen. The car had been de-registered so wasnt worth putting back on the road (in NZ once a car is de-registered you have to go through a very thorough test to put it back on the road).

Problem is I picked late January to do this project so it was F-ing hot. Took me 3 days to do it (mostly on my own).

The thing that takes the most time is some of the finishing stuff, like removing all the clips and screws. And then finding somewhere to store everything :)

I should have taken pictures of the parts Strada I sold recently, rust on both wings, both inner front wings, foot wells, both sills, tailgate,rear inner arches, rear outer arched, all along roof gutters, a pillars, doors, there was probably more rust than car!
 
day 2, late kick off, and loads to do, but for once, we didn't really have to fight the car, pretty much everything came off easily, only a couple of snapped bolts, which were non-essential.

Jai, get to bed! You gotta be up in a few hours to do an early shift!

Mega thanks mate for all your assistance, tools, garage and half your back garden! No way would I have been able to do such an extensive strip down without your assistance :worship:

It was saveable Pottleflump, but I had to be practical. It was worth £100 - £150 as it stood, plus even if I'd sold it I'd have to spend that again to get another parts Uno that probably wouldn't have yielded as many spares. The black 70 SX yielded LOADS of parts for both my mk1 70SX (4 x doors, electric window motors, central locking solenoids, rear quarter glass etc.) and also my mk1 45S SuperFire project (rear beam axle, front crossmember/ steering rack, fuel tank with electric fuel pump, wiring, solenoids and more.) It also had nearly new front struts and springs, front anti-roll bar and also the brake calipers were worth having as spares. The brake dust shields looked almost new! We even managed to get the entire wiring loom out of it too! You can see from the pictures that there was very little left to take after we'd finished with it ;)

We also saved any good mk2 bits that could be sold on to other mk2 owners. I'll put details up in classifieds shortly, but basically will just be selling on at reasonable prices to raise a little cash to fund further Uno projects. Either way, the 70SX will have donated a lot of its parts to keep other Unos on the road so all is for the greater good in the long run :)

Jai took much better pictures than me as I only had my camera phone. I will post some pictures up anyway once I've gone through them so you can see the ultimate in Uno cannibalisation :devil:

One problem though. Where the fook am I gonna put all this stuff?!!!! :eek:
 
Day two of the mk2 Uno 70SX stripdown dawned bright and sunny. Except Jai was busy getting the white Tub sorted out down in West London and yours truly overslept after being wiped out from the day before. :eek:

So somewhat later than planned the second installment of the stripdown began. This is what faced us, and you can see much strippage has already taken place.

Spot something missing? Is that daylight shining through the floorpan? Yes, first thing to come out was the fuel tank. It was surprisingly easy to get out with the most awkward part being trying to remove the rusted fuel filler and breather clamps. Typical.

And here is the tank in Jai's back garden. I need this fuel tank as it has the SPi electric in tank fuel pump. The design is different to my 1986 45 plastic tank that unfortunately can't take the internal electric fuel pump, a shame as being plastic it is better for resisting rust. The 70SX pump can be swapped for the MPi pump very easily, and with the plan being to convert my humble 45 into an MPi sleeper this tank will do the trick at supplying the fuel system.

Next step of the plan was to assess whether the crucial bolts/ nuts/ fasteners would release themselves allowing the the entire suspension assemblies to be removed. We had to decide whether we would finish stripping the car today or whether it would have to be completed Saturday morning as the car couldn't be left outside in the open. Semi gutted car, local Chavs with matches, not a good idea! Fortunately all the nuts and bolts released their grip and we decided that we would get the car done by 7pm, which was the latest the recovery guy could get to us before finishing his day.

So after much spanner twirling, skinned knuckles and many expletives, suddenly this plopped onto the ground:

One front crossmember with steering rack attached! The front anti-roll bar had already been removed and Jai had been busy attacking the hubs with a large mallet. And lots of swearing. Such as "You cock, get undone you f**ker. Bitch! Arse!"

Somewhere along the lines the rear beam axle also dropped onto the ground and got dragged into Jai's garage. Here you can see it along side the front crossmember.

About all that was left that we didn't take were the engine and gearbox (shame as they were good but didn't know anyone who needed them :( ) and the front windscreen. No doubt someone will now tell us they desperately need a 1.4 engine/ gearbox and front screen :rolleyes:

Mrs. Jai had yet to come home and see her back garden. I don't think she'll be very pleased with me turning her garden into a memorial to dead mk2 Unos! :eek:

All the mk2 panels will be offered to other mk2 owners with the exception of the doors (I'm keeping those). Otherwise the panels are also off to the scrap yard if no-one wants them within the next week or two.

And the rear bumper with spats and front bumper with working fogs have to go too. The fogs won't fit a mk1 bumper, and besides I already have mk1 SX bumpers and loads of fogs, plus I prefer the look of the mk1 rear bumper on a mk1 ;)

Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of Jai's garage full of Uno 70SX spares, but this is where we stand now. Loads of Uno bits and needing to find somewhere to put them all. I'll be making a couple of trips to Jai's garage on Saturday to move the worst of the junk to my place and somehow find somewhere to put it all...

Then when I finish my exams in June I can get cracking on making a little tarmac terror out of my 1986 45S! Will take a while so don't hold your breath!

Oh, and I'm aching all over and my fingers are sore and covered in cuts. What have I let myself in for... :eek:

time, we simply ran out when the tow arrived just that little bit ahead of schedule, plus the almighty racket we made hauling what was left onto the truck, that and the goodwill of my neighbours, who put up with this one for two days, as well as last summer with the tub, assorted FF members and mates working on cars round the back, it all adds up

yes would have been nice to get the engine and gearbox, but i was shattered too, had about 8 hours sleep over 2 days, and just ran out of steam.....
