Hello guys, got a few problems with my stilo, not that handy or mechanical with engines to be honest but also i've not had the stilo to long either to get to know common problems or soloutions.

First of all there was an oil leak on the engine so got the seals changed i believe were cam shaft/crank shaft oil seals with belts, the car was running smooth and all was resolved, now barely just 6months later oil was over the engine and on the underside of the bonnet, my first fear was the oil seals again, so i had the garage who originally fixed the problem take a look at it, which they did and at no charge pretty good of them.

So when i picked the car up i was releived to find out the seals where in good order but worried what the problem is now, he suggested a back pressure problem... and that the oil was coming from the dip stick.

The dipstick doesn't sit in all that tight to be honest but even if it wasn't in that tight should oil be pushing it out and spraying over the engine... i can replace the rubber ring so it fits snug, as a temporarily fix i've put some tape around it to make it a tight fit so will see how that works.

I also found that it could be a PCV problem a breather pipe that could need a clean, which i will hopefully be able to sort out 2moro and see if that helps as it apparently if not clean pushs pressure back up through the dipstick and causes it to unseat itself, does anyone know if this is a common problem and what other possible causes there could be for this any help or suggestions is appreciated as i love the stilo and wouldn't want it to get any worse or become worse than it already is.

Regards john.

Well i think i found the culprit, the breather pipe on the rocker cover opposite the oil cap on the other side was blocked up from top to bottom the wire brush (filter i'm guessing) was all bent up and full of dried up oil which had harden to a soil like deposite, not allowing pressure or air through the filter pipe etc... not sure how it works but i'm confident that this could be the cause of the pressure pushing oil up out the dipstick pipe. here's a picture..

Blowing dipstick is a classic symptom of a clogged oil breather (messed up brass filter). Great picture by the way, that really shows the problem. How far down the breather hose was this filter? On my previous car the hose was just 15 cm long, so finding the filter wasn't that hard, but on the Stilo (1.6) I have actually never checked.

How many miles has your engine done? Is cleaning the filter included in the service schedule as I haven't noticed this?

Hi Jim, 78k it has on its clock 53 plate, with a good service history, I don't believe that flame trap has ever been changed, we have had the car for a year now, and it could of been related to the oil seals going about 6 months ago I'd recomend everyone to check it at least every service to prevent the problems we have had, I don't think its included in any service the car has had previously, also a quick question I seen a fire trap for a punto looks similar from the picture on eBay, On luck for a stilo specific one, think it would work? Was around £3.50 to buy it now price

the top of the flame trap sat level with the top of the breather pipe when i started poking around with it at first, i thought it was some sort of release valve not familiar with engines so i didn't want to dig too deep or hard.. till my gf came out to look she poked it out lol but the whole breather pipe top to bottom was just dried up oil well and truly no air passing through it.

Gave it a blast yesterday down the motor way and through the gears to see if the dipstick was popping off, didn't budge at all no oil at all, and i tell you what it sure does fly now.. it was kinda quick before but it's nippy now, and alot smoother through all gears just over the sake of a blocked pipe.. lol
