For the mr2 mk2 rev1 n/a uk spec.

On a cold start the engine runs really rough and oil pressure light is on, give it some revs (up to about 2500 rpm) and the light goes out.

I was going to get a pressure gauge fitted but havent got the money yet :( just had the oil and filter changed for 5w30 fully synth, do I really have anything to be worried about? or is it best to get the oil pump changed? don't want the bottom end going really.

I would get it done but like I said haven't really got the money yet, also needs new driveshaft oil seal, rocker cover gasket, timing belt and pulleys

why do you have 5w30 oil?

have you checked your oil level?

it would probably be a good idea to get an oil pressure guage fitted to the car and see what it is doing, mine raises to 6bar cold and then reduces back to 2.5-3bar warm idle, upto 6bar revved.

yours could be an indication of low oil, tired oil pump or the wrong oil.

oil was changed for a thinner grade as I thought it may be old/thick oil that's causing the problem, with the new oil it idles better than it used to but there's still the problem of on a cold start I have to rev it to get the oil pressure up and to stop it stalling.

Oil level and grade is fine was done by a mr2/celica specialist so it's the right oil for the car.

if the car is old i would suggest running a thicker oil (i have to use the term 'thicker' loosely because its not technically correct) to bring the pressure up.

my 20vT runs 15w50 fully synth now and will start up and run almost 6bar

i dunno about on an MR2 but on a 20v you would have to take the engine out and strip it down, 'might' be possible in situ but i wouldnt want to try.

i'd ask on a toyota forum if you are a member to any.

i bought an autogauge oil pressure gauge from ebay for about £25, it was a bugger to fit though as the thread sizes on the sensor were imperial not metric so nothing i could get in the shops would fit properly, i re threaded a close size adaptor i got from Pirtek and fitted it where the standard one would be on the coupe.

I assume you would need a sender unit as well? it's not as simple as wire the gauge in and go as the OEM one is just on or off

Could be oil pressure switch as well, is there any way to test these?

Taken from the Marea Turbo thread:

Stopped in to Pirtek today to get some help with fitting my replacement oil pressure sensor so i can fit the guage i bought awhile back, i was told the sensor supplied had a silly imperial size thread on it and wouldnt go into anything properly as they only supplied metric.

i bought all the bits and the closest size metric adaptor which allowed me to simply wind it in and slightly cross the threads, the pitch different is so small its just adjusted them a little really.

the hose is to allow room for it to bend around a bracket on the back of the engine block that would otherwise be in the way, in total this cost £21.71

I was kinda luck in that i only had to replace the pressure sender unit, the 20vT has both pressure sender and pressure switch, uoi will probably need a T-peice to be able to add in the new sender unit.
