Hi
Just had my 2002 Multipla JTD serviced by Kwik Fit.
Got the car back and noticed the temperature gauge (which is generally at 2 bars and rises to 3 occasionally) was very quickly up to 4 bars.

I also noticed that a new "oil level too high" message was coming on every time I started the car.

Took it back to Kwik Fit the next day. Having half emptied the oil, they showed me that even when the dipstick showed half full, the computer was intermittently saying "oil level too high" when the engine was started. They also ran the engine until the fan came on and there seemed to be no issue with overheating. Mechanic did tell me that the computer actually turned itself off at 5 bars on the temp gauge!

They told me that the car itself was completely fine, and that although it could be the sensors, it was more likely the computer and I needed to get an auto electrician to look at it - probably one hour's work / £50.

I had neither of these problems before taking the car in for the service, so...

  • How much of this could be coincidence?

  • Might the mechanics have damaged the oil level and/or temp sensors?

  • Is this a wildly positive view of how easy/cheap it would be to get it fixed by an auto electrician?

  • Should I go to a Fiat dealer or an independent electrician?

  • How do I find a good auto electrician in the Stockport area?

Help and advice please!!
And many thanks in advance.

I'd say that was a bit of a coincidence, particularly as they did the oil, although I can't think what they could have done to cause this sort of problem.
Try contacting their head office and tell them the problem.
If it was fine when you handed it over to them, and it had a problem when they'd finished with it, then they should sort it really.

The dipstick is the most reliable measure of the oil level (as long as it's the right one for the engine, and the car's level), always take it as the correct reading over any other.

Did they top-up or replace the coolant?

When you say;
Mechanic did tell me that the computer actually turned itself off at 5 bars on the temp gauge!
Does that mean it got that high while they had it, or was he just telling you what he thought should happen if it did go that high?

I don't know my Multipla that well mechanically yet (only had it since 3 Oct) but I can't see how they could damage either of the sensors just doing a service

It shouldn't cost too much just to have a diagnostic check done, ring a few garages for a quote.
