Re: case fans

There's also a couple of software apps you can use...

Try MotherBoard Monitor : http://mbm.livewiredev.com/
or SpeedFan : http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

MBM is supposed to be best, but I can't get it detect the monitoring chip on my Dual PIII but speedfan does it fine, Although MBM detects more on my P4. The MBM site gives a list of the Motherboards it supports, and is more usuable as it runs as a service IIRC.

They're both free BTW

alan......

when you say you have one on the top do you mean the power supply fan or.....the case you have has got a hole in the literal "top" of your pc that pushs air out of the top of the PC, i'd really reccomend one of these babies!

if you put your hand over the fan it should be obviuos if air is begining pushed out, if it isn't then the fan aint powerful enough or is worn and knackered. The fan for the power supply that pushs out as standard is usually quite weak (some are better than others) so it aint too loud. if you only have this fan extracting air then you need another one as this don't cut it on 1.5gig plus cpu's.

Re: alan....

65 degs...is way too hot!

With Pentium's it is not too bad, they just get hot and slow down, but if you have an AMD...they just cook themselves...

I don't know whats happening with Processors these days, i have a 1.2ghz Pentium III with no fans (except the PSU's fan), and that doesnt go much above 45 deg.

I also have a 2.1ghz AMD and it was sitting around the 52-53 deg mark, until it fried itself...

Case fans make a huge difference, and also the size of the case...as pointed out above, you need the air to circulate.

This is what i just bought...IMO £23 is a bargain (No PSU).

I am now running a 2.2ghz AMD overclocked to 2.4ghz and its still staying about 38 deg...with a case temp of 26 deg.

Re: alan....

i think i'll have a fiddle when i've finished my exams, tidy the system up, rubber mount the case fans, sort out the graphics card fan and maybe get a quite cooler. you can get some which are 30dB flat out, better than the standard ones which are about 47dB!
