Hi all. Been searching through the threads for the answer to my newest problem but no conclusion or solution found so hoping that someone clever is online today :)
I have a 1.9 JTD that will not start when either hot or cold (not a glowplug issue). Turns over fine, diesel fuel getting to the rail ( I checked lift pump) but no go until I spray a bit of easystart into air box and away she goes perfectly.
Once running, idle is smooth, power is there and all is fine.
Turn off the engine and try to restart, back to square one, just turns over and does not fire up :(

Any ideas anyone, it's doing my head in!

Not clever about cars sorry but I know a Multipla recently that would only start with easystart it turned out to be high pressure pump fault

my neighbour had a problem like this with his disco. Turned out that the diesel pump timing had jumped. He set the timing back up and had no problems since.
I ain't too familiar with diesels so im just going off what he told me.

Did it come on suddenly? I'd start with the crank sensor.

Yeah sort of, got progressively worse over a week or so to the point where it won't start unless I spray easy start and then all is fine.
Wouldn't a crank sensor fault leave it running rough though when I did get it running? Mine runs like there's no problem at all, just won't start

I've just had a thought from what someone said and plugged in the laptop to check the fuel pressure while cranking.
The actual pressure reaches about 60 bar and asks for 300 bar.
That can't be right can it?
Surely it should reach alot nearer 300, say 200 bar?
If I spray easystart and get it running, it then says actual pressure just under 300 bar on average.

The gradual failure is typical of crank sensor - that's why I asked the question. Some folks get it when the engine's hot, others irrespective of engine temperature.

So it seems it could be either HP fuel pump or the crank sensor. As the latter is a lot cheaper and quicker to fix, I'd start with the latter.

Thank you so much, I'll do that :)

E&OE. No warranty inferred or implied!!!!!

You've had your Multi for quite some time now. How many miles has it done?

No worries, won't hold you to it haha.
It's done 137000 now and very tired, can't afford to do much more these days so if it's not this sensor, it may be time to get rid, poor thing.

ps. Would the car still run so well once started with easystart if this sensor IS faulty do you think?

The Easystart is misleading as it's not being supplied by the same route as the diesel normally is. It combusts very readily, so if it makes its way into the cylinders and gets compressed by the crank turning, the engine has no choice but to 'run'. Where the Easystart leaves off and the injected diesel takes over I'm not so sure, but it makes any position 'sensing' carried out by the crank sensor in getting the engine started completely irrelevant.

New crank sensor fitted after much swearing as it's a bit tight for space.
But still doesn't start.
Taking a few minutes to calm down, regroup and have a re think else I'll just put some C4 under it and blow it sky high soon!!!!!!

I'll send you some, I'll put 'plasticine' on the customs declaration.

B*gger. Sorry to have lead you up the wrong path.

As for what else it could be - if you say it runs normally once started, I'm a bit confused . Any leaks from bleed off pipes by the injectors?

Well, the saga continues.....
Did a leak off test today into a home made set up using some small sample bottles I had. All came back good, all roughly the same amount, which in one way I was pleased about, but am still scratching my head what it is.
However, a mechanic friend of mine has just told me that on some cars (he's not familiar with Multiplas though) they use the camshaft sensor while starting only and then ignore the signals once running which kind of matches my problem.
I have only changed the crankshaft sensor.
What do you think gang? Anybody changed a cam sensor?
