Noise in car - Engine

Ok when idle my car makes a wierd noise, the usual noise with induction kit coming from engine and then on top of that its ticking or rattling, cant decide where its coming from, i recon maybe from the area where the cambelt is, on the drivers side, any ideas as to what it could be?

I had a similar problem recently and it turned out that I had a blockage in the engine and the oil was totally clogged, the blockage stopped the oil travelling round the engine causing the clicking / ticking noise. I almost had to get a complete new engine but my mechanic managed to sort it out. You may or may not have the same thing. How long ago was it since your last service.

last service was ages ago cos i do most myself, gonna get full service soon so i better get that done asap

engine flush

you could try an engine flush

since its due all the service stuff, pop the engine flush in your engine and let it run for a while then do all the filters and oil changes etc

btw, i thought i had something similar wrong but it turns out to be just slightly noisy tappets, tried engine flush and top end treatment and both got me nowhere.

try "forte" products seem people on here have had some success....i didn't

I had a similar noise a few weeks ago on my Brava,sounded like someone running a stick along a railing, turned out to be a crankshaft damper or a front pulley damper,not sure exactly what it s called,but when it went i had no power steering and my battery light stayed on.Its a Fiat only part,costs £60, took my local garage half an hour to fit it.Hope this helped.

ok, found out what it was, mum's BF (ex mechanic) said it sounds like exhaust which is what i thought so opened the bonnet and seems like the gasket on the downpipe is gone, will tighten it and if that doesnt work drop it down and replace the gasket.
Easy fix and no money spent.... YAY
