Technical Noise from steering

the noise has gone from mine !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it must of been the springs because i had it lowered yesterday and now its gone :D

Thanks to all who posted on this thread. It has enabled me to successfully diagnose a seizing nearside suspension top mount bearing on our GP. As described above, the "mattress spring" noise is correct. It might also be worth noting that I was getting a "twang" about every eighth of a turn of the steering wheel. This happens whether the car is stationary or moving; whether the engine is running or not (i.e whether the electric power steering is powered or not); and whether there is weight on the strut or not (i.e car on ground or jacked up).

Our GP is a 1.4 Active Sport but one of the early ones, 55 reg, so is out of even the 3rd year warranty now. However, I was able to get the job done at my friendly local independent for a reasonable £86 (£60 for 1.5 hrs labour, £15 for the genuine Fiat part, +VAT). Much better than a huge bill for a new rack that I had imagined when I first heard the noise. I asked that they would lubricate the new part before it went in, as have seen rumours that the originals are assembled dry!

When removed it was clear that water had got in and rusted the bearing. I won't be pressure washing up in that area again as I don't wish to encourage possible water entry to the bearings in future. However, clearly the seal design is in any case inadequate (if indeed there is one) and this component should last the life of the car, not fail after only a tad over 3 years and 32k careful miles. I'm waiting for the offside one to go now!

FYI https://www.fiatforum.com/grande-punto/199287-knock-front-suspesion.html also references many others who have had similar problems (and there are other similar threads).
