Hi, I've replaced all the front and rear shocks on my 2012 TA. The noise was there before the shocks were replaced. It comes from both sides at the rear and the only way I can describe the sounds is as if the boot is open and knocking. I've also replaced the bump stops and the exhaust doesn't seem loose. The boot has been completely empty of everything and it still makes the noise. I am not sure what else it could be, so thought I'd ask for some advice before it goes to the garage to be looked at, as I've run out of ideas. Thank you

Yes, I've emptied the boot completely and made sure the seats are secured properly. I'm really not sure what's causing it.

What shocks did you use? Are your rear springs seated correctly?

:idea:when COLD - unused,
grab the exhaust tailpipe and see if it'll swing the silencer into something..,

the MOT are only interested in it "falling off" rather than being "slackly mounted";)

IF it's a bit too free - fit "cableties" around the exhaust support rubbers to add support/ limit their movement.

been there done that..

I used Bilstein b4's and have checked the exhaust. I think I might get hold of some more rear shocks, swap them over and see if it still makes the noise, I case the shocks are faulty?

It only makes the noise when going from 0 to 30mph over pot holes or cobbled speed bumps. I've tried to get it to make the noise by bouncing the rear end when parked on the drive but the noise won't happen. ?

I had the same issue with brand new shocks, I replaced them again and the noise went. Bouncing up and down on the car did nothing I had to use my cousins driveway for diagnosis! (Bumpy old farm road)

I see a market for a shaker platform, to work out where a noise is coming from?
Our 500 needed a new front lower control arm, the car was silent in normal use but made a really bad noise when the suspension was pushed up past its normal resting point, so bouncing it did not work, you checked any anti roll bar issues?
If you're rattling the exhaust its up down more than side to side, try sitting in the back with someone else driving? if possible also try with the seat down, old trick sit in back with a metal rod against your ear and hold against various areas( strut top etc) whilst going over the "right bumps" to create the noise, that way you can far more clearly pin point where the noise is coming from.

I doubt its the shocks as you said it was there before you replaced them.

Have exactly the same issue on my 3/2011 TA and I was thinking about replacing the rear shocks....
But now ....

The noise appears only if cold (below 5) outside. In summer it disappears completely.

Also in case if passengers on rear seats and / or heavy load in booth it seem also that it disappears.

Finally I have no idea....

I've taken some pictures of what I assume is the stabiliser bar. I'm not sure if it should be curved and also wonder if it's knocking where it goes through the hole. Sorry for the vague description, but not sure how else to describe it! I fitted new shocks to mine 2 weeks ago. They made a clunking sound too, swapped back and no noise.

Is that the standard bumpstop fitted? Looks a bit long.

Might be a silly suggestion but are your rear seats locked in properly?

There's not much to the rear suspension, were the shocks new?

Is that "bar" not the torsion bar? If so I doubt it should be bent all ones I've seen in the past are dead straight?
I had some shockers that made a really bad noise when it got cold too, either the oil or valving was bust new ones fixed it, not this car though.
