No boot

Currently reading:
No boot

I get the message

SCSI ID: 5 NEC CD-ROM DRIVE:466 20.0

A BOOTABLE CD-ROM IS DETECTED IN YOUR CD-ROM DRIVE...

The boot sections on your bootable CD-ROM are:
0. DEFAULT ENTRY

It then pops up the SATA raid controller, carries on with a boot and eventually says

strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility

CD Drive isn't compatable, if it isn't recognising it and you know it is installed correctly. :bang:

But it seems it is recognising it, even that its bootable just not actually booting off it...

Have you managed to boot up the machine at all and see if it reads any CD's at all. Also, have you checked you have the right jumper setting on the drive and that the cable is the correct way round. Also check your SCSI controller for any errors thrown, the SCSI controller BIOS would be the next port of call.

Hang on, are you trying to use SCSI and SATA together?

Here's a thought, is the SCSI on a separate BIOS?

If so you'll need to set the SCSI BIOS to boot off the CD then the motherboard BIOS to boot of SCSI.

As it's a Dell, use the OpenManage Server Installation CD.
Download the ISO from http://ftp.us.dell.com/sysman/OM_5.1_ISM_A00.ISO
Burn it to a CD and boot from it.
It'll walk you through RAID configuration and OS setup, including installing the drivers and OpenManage Server Assistant Installation files for you.
And how much memory is in that machine for the POST to take that long?!

I am victorious!

Basically went back to old skool tactics. Remove everything that isn't pertinent to the task at hand! Removed the floppy and the tape drive. Disabled something or other in one of the on board scsi BIOS. Pressed the power button and went for tea. Peppered steak, salad and new potatoes :yum:

Came back to find the screen covered in Dell OpenManage. :woot:

Whipped the OM cd out, threw in 2003 server and I'm away. Just waiting for the Data partition to scrub.

Raid config in OM?? Nooo! It's got a PERC 2 and its in use! Got a Perc 3/DI coming to boost the speed to 160mb/s.

Cant remember how much memory is in it - about a gig and a half I think.
