Technical Newbie - Persistent radio issues

I have installed an after market head unit in my GP and after it failing to work I swapped the wires as advised in other threads. This kinda solves the problem but:

1. I still have to turn the radio on manually each time I start the car
2. None of the settings saved: stations, EQ, volume etc.

When I turn the car on the radio lights up but then switches off almost instantly after.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
