Technical Newbie -Milometer

Hi

I have a yellow seicento sporting 1.1 2000 (W), 42k miles, but just after it's MOT the milometer stopped working the rev counter still ok and also sometimes the speedo sticks on 0, this will work again after a swift bang to the top of the unit!
Has anyone had a similar problem?
How much will this cost me to fix and what parts do you think i will need?

If it's an MPI (big round air filter box) with electronic mileometer, likely to be a wiring fault. Otherwise, speedo cable is the likely culprit.
