I bought a 2002 Seicento as a project. There is a noise from the engine. I have never worked on the engine of any car before. I think it could be the valve clearances or cambelt. I was going to try the valves first. I bought the Porter´s manual (which I find a bit unclear) and it says the valve clearances do not need to be adjusted. However, the owner´s manual says they do. I think the Technical Manual is too technical for me. I can do a lot of things with cars if I have clear instructions. I am afraid I can´t find any video on youtube. Does anybody here know where to find instructions? Preferably for a 1.1 mpi. Even a video in another language would be helpful.

My motor trade technical book does give a valve clearance setting for your model and other details of a technical nature, but is of little use for a DIY project.
Furthermore as you freely confess "I have never worked on the engine of any car before."then my genuine advice to you would be to speak to someone with more experience before you undertake any serious work on your project vehicle as it is very easy to, by mistake to damage parts that can be expensive to replace and also can be dangerous for you and others.
A Haynes manual if available for your vehicle may give a little more DIY advice and if you find your Porter's manual a bit unclear, it may help you before you dive in at the deep end.:)

Thanks for your reply, bugsymike. I see the Haynes manual is for the Cinqueciento. I believe the engine is slightly different. I´d feel more confident if it was for exactly the right engine. While I have never done any engine stuff, I have replaced driveshafts, shocks and electrical parts with just the manual or youtube. I am not worried about damaging anything expensive as the car cost very little money. I know there is a risk I could injure myself but everything in life contains risk and the risk is probably on par with cycling to the park.

Has anyone done the valve clearances using the Haynes manual for the Cinqueciento?

So no actual Seicento manual from Haynes.:(
As you say if car cheap then not a major issue and a good source of learning.:)
I don't claim to know everything and I have been in the motor trade since 1969, "everyday is a school day" as is often said.;)
If you can give the Engine Series number from chassis plate, I have the technical details for that engine and probable details on fitting cambelt if applicable, if you like.

I think this might be the Engine Series Number: ZFA187000. FiatMatt94, I appreciate what you are saying. I saw that manual but I found it heavy going. It didn´t, as far as I could see, give specific instructions on how to do the valve clearances. I am open to be corrected on that. Even if it did give the instructions, I am not sure I would be able to follow them. I have, however, had a lot of success following Haynes manuals with other cars.

Assuming that is the correct engine Series number, I have Technical Data but nothing on cambelt side, it lists the smaller engine as chain driven, but the 1.1 doesn't match your details. Use the index at edge of page to match spec.
