Hi Guys,
Picked up my new Multiwagon yesterday. I'm changing job and new a workhorse for 6months but hopefully the stilo will get me through hell of a lot longer.
It's my second stilo jtd but first wagon.
Here's the eBay link.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272447913952

Brought back yesterday but has a few issues. If people could point me in right directions for a few things it would be appreciated.

New wing mirror glass required both sides- ordered.
Temp gauge says red hot whether hot or cold...doesnt overheat or anything sinister so maybe sensor or wiring? Suggestions? Is the sensor located in the thermostat block?
Outside temp sensor shows minus 8 as of yesterday? Where to start?
Fitting of new rear parking sensors. Ordered.
Climate control doesn't work correctly on drivers side- will read the long thread on it.
Egr clean and blank. Which kit to use? There's some on eBay with two ovalish plates and one squarish one?
Replace lamp in boot light.
Clean ,clean ,clean.

Overall I'm quite happy with it. Drove it back yesterday. It's efficient, plenty of power, very comfortable and tons of space. Hopefully kept for a long while longer.

When most of this is rectified and happy it will then have gearbox mount replaced and fresh cambelt I think. Really want to bring her back to its former glory.

Any help is appreciated guys.

Hey Dummy,

Looks like a very tidy and solid car mate - well done.

I would say the temperature gauge is probably a fault with the instrument cluster.

When I got my Abarth the garage reported that the gauge did the same but the car was reading the temperature just fine - so the instrument panel was reporting it wrong. Eventually the instrument panel died in it's entirity and had to get it repaired.

A replacement will be easy enough to source via eBay i'd have thought anyway if that is cheaper than cost of repair. I didnt have a lot of choice but to repair as low mileage Abarth clusters just don't come up on eBay. I have a 'spare' JTD instrument cluster in the shed that my car ran on for a while whilst other was out for repair. I'm selling my Abarth wanting a JTD so i'd prefer to keep hold of it but if you get stuck let me know. If you have another JTD already it wouldn't be a difficult job to swap the clusters over to perform a quick test! If you're anywhere near Grimsby, North East Lincs I don't mind helping.

You'll know very easily if the car thinks it's red hot because the cooling fans will kick in straight away when you turn her on, even when stone cold. If the cooling fans don't kick in pretty quickly you can be fairly sure the car is reading the right temperature - the dash is just not displaying it.

If you unplug the temp sender - which is as your correctly say in the thermostat - the fans should kick in I think as like a fail safe. So you can test the fan functionality that way. Fiat / MultiECUScan also has an actuator test for fans.

EGR blanking - take your pick really, they all do the same job. I've made my own blanking plate before now from old biscuit tin. Not even joking but it works. The Oval ones sit on the exhaust in side of the EGR, square ones sit on the manifold exhaust out side of EGR.

I guess you're thinking the outside air temp is wrong.... The sensor I believe is on the drivers side door mirror, bottom of. If you're replacing the mirror glass would be a good opportunity to take a look at it!

I'd get the cluster repaired. Yellowstilo on here can fix them, though he's in Holland. Postage isn't too shocking though compared to the other repairers prices.

If you swap the clocks (my experiences after mine got lost in the post) you could end up with a set that also fails in short order. And you will have to reset the mileage and the flashing odometer since the BCM won't recognize the clocks, even though they'll otherwise work).

Thanks for your replys guys it is appreciated.

Th car is fairly tidy for £350. Really happy with it. I'm fiat mad and now have a stilo jtd, coupe 20v turbo and cinq sporting.
I haven't had much time with the car yet, should have some time the weekend.
Hopefully new mirrors will be with me by then so will be a running thread.

Took the stilo out to screwfix and weirdly the outside temp was reading pretty accurate. I will clean all I see I reckon and find the connectors.

Car runs great, no temp issues at all. I do have access to a spare jtd cluster and Abarth one actually so may give them a try. The temp gauge actually changed temp on startup today which is weird. I will be concerned if the light is illuminated I think as that signal is given out by the Ecu I believe?

I will order the egr blank kit then.

Thanks again for your replies. Will keep posting as will help others hopefully.

The outside temperature sensor wiring goes through the door connector. Lift the grey engagement clip, then disconnect the connector and clean both parts with electrical contact cleaner.

Hi,

Thanks Davren. Will clean that up on sat and report back.

Much appreciated.

Getting outside to sort the mirror and hopefully outside temp shortly.
Did alittle bit of cleaning to get rid of some of the grimy bits found.

One further fault which occurred yesterday is the boot handle switch.

The boot would constantly pop open.
After alittle digging I found a split in the rubber and switch completely saturated.

Is the switch and rubber cover a separate replaceable item?

I now need to see how the glass part opens! Not a major concern if it doesn't mind.

The switch with rubber cover is available; item 19 in the diagram below. The one marked E579 is only for cars equipped with the "EasyGo" keyless entry system.

I now need to see how the glass part opens! Not a major concern if it doesn't mind.

If the car has the separate opening tailgate window, there will be a rubber covered button under it, as shown in the diagram below.

You can also open the complete tailgate or the tailgate window with the boot lid button on the remote control. Press the button for more than 2 seconds to open the complete tailgate. Press the button twice within 2 seconds to open the tailgate window.

If either the tailgate or the window is already partially or completely open, the logic of the system will not allow you to open the other one. This is to prevent damage that could be caused by the window colliding with the roof spoiler if both were separately open at the same time.

Only had time for a quick mess today. Changed both wing mirror glass as the mirrored finished had burnt through as you can see above.

Inside had a baby wipe scrub, but will need to get a brush on the plastics and some gentle chemical i reckon as there is some ingrained dirt.

You can also see my temp gauge temp at cold! Another qwerk!

It looks as mine doesn't open the glass unfortunately but no big deal. Very happy with it.
Costs so far
Car - £350
Heated mirror glass -£20 for both sides
Fiat Key ring - £4
Total £374

Not a fat lot done due to freezing weather!
But I have bought a new gearbox mount to stop all the engine bay vibrations and a new pair of number plates. I have also ordered a Bluetooth elm 327 odb reader.
Currently making arrangements for cambelt kit , aux belt and water pump.

Cars coming along well. Need to pop into local stealers regarding boot switch as nothing online by the looks of it.
Contemplating a cheap double din sat nav radio. Unsure yet, or fit a parrot Bluetooth kit.
Parking sensors have arrived aswell. Plenty to get on with

Top work that man, sounds like you're getting a lot of tinker time in and having fun. I'm jealous :)

Re double din satnavs - depends how techy you feel but I had a chinese android double din satnav in my previous Audi A4. It was awesome. It did everything, TV, internet, radio (although reception not the best), CD, DVD, bluetooth, GPS. It also came with the Torque app, so you could have instant parameter readouts on the dash - which would work with your elm bluetooth dongle.

I wanted to get one for the wife's Abarth but with her selling because she needs a diesel I don't quite know what we will end up with next. I'd like it to be a Stilo again, and she wouldn't mind either, but finding a 3 door JTD within a reasonable radius is proving hard work!

Certainly not as much time as I would like to be honest. Just gathering the bits while I can for the moment.
Exactly what I'm looking at ,a Chinese wince radio. I can then hopefully use fesmobile on it and do all my diagnostic stuff on that screen via Bluetooth.
Saves getting the laptop out.
Probebrly go for a shallow one as not to bothered by cd/DVD as long it has a card slot. One thing I didn't wana loose is steering wheel control but will have to sacrifice if I go that route.

Maybe better to sell the Abarth and go hunting for the jtd further afield.
We loved our 3 door jtd. Great engine, and supossedly even better with a remap.
Saying that I have been fortunate to drive a 2.4 converted fiat coupe running 195bhp and Tourque was fantastic. My ideal fiat coupe/stilo!

I wouldn't bother with win ce, it's aimed at palm devices... would have been better going android or an intel nuc with a 7inch touch screen... then you could have windows 10 and it would be very responsive quick.

So ordered my Chinese head unit.

£62 delivered seems a good price if it does all it says. The standard ISO connectors on it are better than the vast bunch of leads usually found on Chinese units.

The spec. in the listing only says NTSC for television, so you may not be able to pick up the UK PAL system broadcasts.
.

I've paid £58 delivered. I really just want it for radio, Bluetooth, video and sat nav.
If it can do those ok I will be happy to be honest.
I like the thought of intergrated sat nav and Bluetooth.
I have an android unit in my Mazda bongo and is pretty flakey so wince is worth a try. The NYC would be overkill I think for what I'm trying to achieve

Mate if you're happy with it go for it. I'd love to hear your feedback on what you think it's like - as I like the look of these things too!

It'll look great in your wagon as well.

Awesome progress mate, well played!

So some stuff has arrived for the stilo which will hopefully few things will go on this weekend.
New plates
Elm reader-will test it out.
Gearbox mount- wait for cambelt fitment
Good scrub of the door card one by one.
Try and sort outside temp sensor.

Next weekend I should have my pick of spares from a 5door jtd so nab some bits hopefully.
Long wait from China for the head unit!

Quick question, unsure but mileage dispalyed on the display is held by the instrument cluster? Maybe stupid question but as it isn't mechanical I didn't know if it was given the value.
I will pick up a second hand cluster but may need to adjust miles to suit?

Yes, mileage is on the cluster memory.

it can be re-written via the diag port with appropriate software. I don't exactly know what software that would be mind as it's not something I've done before.

It does record somewhere in some memory the number of mileage rewrites too.
