Cheers for your responses. I wasn't sure whether the connection of one of the gold bits wasn't properly working and, in fiddling with it, have snapped one of them off which has messed it all up! Have ordered a replacement so will see if that resolves it or whether it could be the tomtom unit itself.

The replacement fixed it - turns out it was a dodgy connection after all! Cheers all.
