new fiat engines

Largest diesel engine that is part of the group is a 150bhp unit shared by the:-

Bravo
Croma
Astra
Vectra
Zafira
9-3
9-5

And they also do do a 180bhp in the saabs after looking through my top gear mag :D.

which group?
largest 1.9 output in the fiat group is 150bhp (JTDm)
largest 1.9 output in the GM group is 180bhp (TiD)

That must simply be a mapped 150 multijet then... I could have around 190+ from my 1.9mjet if I wanted.

corect, the GM & fiat range both only use different mapping for the different outputs (and charge you a load extra on the rrp for the privledge of a better map).

an aftermarket remap will take you way beyond the highest oem output, well over 200bhp is common on alfas with the 1.9JTDm so the same will apply to all the others that use the 1.9 engine, but as always you then need to be wary of premature clutch failure and slipping. remap and uprated clutch is the way forward.

easily 250bhp from what i've heard, but you need a big car to take the 2.4 without destroying your handling, think stilo abarth style handling problems. even the 156 doesnt take kindly to the weight.

And the Cadilliac BLS, another Vecrtra Variant...

GM has three other Vectra clones in the USA, branded Chevrolet, Pontiac and Saturn. None are sold with diesel engines.

Sometimes have different turbo's and always have different anciliary's(sp?). Are people forgetting the 2.4 JTDm Oddpot :slayer:. That can be remapped to 200bhp+ easy.

It's already up to 210 from the factory. See my comment above on this engine.

Being a diesel fan I've just read in a motoring mag that, to overcome turbo lag, Fiat has developed a new breed of twin-stage turbodiesel engines (TST) using 2 turbos - a small one spinning from low revs and a larger turbo which gradually takes over as engine speed rises. Fiat Powertrain Technologies says its new 1.9 JTD TST engine has the greatest 'torque density' on the market to give petrol-like response at low revs. The TST engine has 50% more low-end torque that the equivalent single-turbo Fiat 1.9JTD and typically cuts 11% off the 0-62mph time. Yet it consumes exactly the same amount of fuel as the current 1.9 JTD.
2 versions of the JTD TST engine are planned, with 178bhp for sale to other marques and a 187bhp version which Fiat Group are keeping for themselves! So they appear not to be making the same mistake as they did with selling their common rail technology to Bosch? The new engine will first appear in the Alfa 159 in 2008. Article didn't say when it would appear in a Fiat, but presumably around the same time. Start saving up, can't wait! :D

i've always said the small + large turbos method is the best way to beat lag. its nothing new, but its very rare on a production vehicle.

i'm confident the twin stage turbo setup will eventually become the industry standard for all turbo engines.

i first heard about the 1.9JTD TST back in june (100bhp version iirc), but there was no mention of any plans to use it in a production car. the 159 is definately a good car to debut this engine in imo.
