Hi, can anyone tell me how to check if my wheel bearings are ok, as I was taking some friends to the airport and one said they could hear a knocking noise on the back end and said it could be my wheel bearings......(I myself can't hear anything)..... I have a MAREA 1.9 TDI (97)
thanx

when the back wheel bearins are goin they give off a hum noise which gets noticbly loud the more they wear an get louder if you turn at speed i tought very much its a bearin it sound more like a cv joint but if the noise is comin from the back its not a cv its the rubber bushins on your shock it cost about 6euro for a new bushin an there easy to fit,but also the wish bone on the back has a habbit of wearin out fill your car with fat people an stnad behind it an see if the wheel is sloped at an angle if it is its your bearin in your wish bone an u cant replace it u have to got a whole new wish bone

thanx for quick replies, I will check in the morning and see if it wobbles or not,
once again thanx........ Fay

well I have shook the wheels and they do not wobble and the do not look slopping when people in the back, but my friend still says they can hear the noise, which in fact I can't (mybe I'm going deaf) lol all I can hear is the engine...... well I think its the engine as I have never had a diesel car before and it is quite loud ...... to be on the safe side I think I will have to take it to a garage to have them look it over, I just don't fancy the wheel dropping off while I'm going down the motorway.....
Fay

if the wheel bearing fails the wheel wont just drop off, it'll make a great noise when the bearing collapses but it'll stay on fine for many miles, and then seize solid when you stop and it cools.

months before that happens you'll hear a squeal, if its the passenger side it'll squeal when you go round right hand bends (and vice versa).

to check at this early stage you simple spin the wheel (with it jacked up) and listen for roughness. its often hard to feel for play when the bearing first starts to get noisey but you can hear the roughness when you spin the wheel.

if the car has done 100k on the original bearings they should be changed regardless, its a 5 minute job but you 'should' buy new nuts for refitting and you will no doubt need to buy a socket of the correct size (very big)

 well took the car into the garage to be checked over and he said I need 2 new back tyres ........ my spanish is not very good but he tried to show me why but I am still confused can anyone explain??????
he ran my hand over the back tyres from the front towards the back and it was smooth but when I ran my hand back towards the front it was bubbley. but can't understand what that means.....the tread on the tyres are ok it was just these bubbles. :bang:

thanx Fay

Hi Mate, Well when I bought my Marea 2.0 20v back in March, It had a rear rumbling noise that I thought was a nackered rear wheel bearing also, but as I like tinkering with my car I had a look myself, I found that it was not the wheel bearing but it was the rear passenger side tyre, it had undulating tread patterns, so I put that wheel/tyre on the front and It was ten times worse on the front so I thought sod it, I'll go and replace all the tyre's as they were all a crap tyre brand. Hey presto, smooth quiet grippy tyre's, NO rumble what so ever.

I hope that shed's some light.

that happens to tyres sometimes, i had it on a pair a few years ago, i just put up with the noise and waited till they were bald, as i always do. dont know what causes it???

(y) thanx for all your help guy's, well I now know its nothing serious and my wheels are not going to drop off, lol I will just plod on and leave the tryes untill the tread wears... once again thanx
