Need advice on Dump Valves

I know there are no Turbo Bravos, Bravas, Mareas etc out there besides the diesel ones or modded ones, so i am guessing not many of you will know, but what are the types of dump valves around?

I have heard of diaphram dump valves, piston dump valves, i've seen dump valves, with big trumpets on them, i've seen dump valves that look like jet engines, whats the difference etc.

My next question, i want a really loud dump valve on my car, any recommendations?

Joske

Theres a Subaru in the street and when he shoots of down the street and releases the accelerator always when hes next to me when i'm tinkering with my car, it almost deafens me.

Hence the reason why i want one thats just as loud. :) Subaru ones are made to fit on the intercooler so dont say get on of them.

Also my dump valve is fine, BUT if i can get a stupid loud one that would be awesome.

Joske

The sound is partly down to how much air its dumping. On a diesel where the dump valve is not operating in the same way as on a petrol car it will always sound different.

If you want a loud one get a turbo petrol car.

Fair Enough. :)

What about the other question about the other types of dump valves available?

Howcome whether it be a RS Turbo, Subaru some sound louder than others, there must be some that are louder.

Joske

Depends if they are running higher boost. If the dump valve has a small openning the air will flow very fast and make a lot of noise.

I'll have to research into it and find out.

Tom do you know what PSi a standard 100BHP TD engine produces?

Joske

Yeah but i never fitted it in the end, as i couldn't get the pod right on the a-pillar.

my mate has a pug 306 td and he has a twin piston dump valve and his is alot louder then my 20vt coupe which just have a normal single piston baileys...i am running about 1.1bar so the pressure theory although it is generally right (more boost more noise) isnt as black and white as you think...

talk to dervdoctor.co.uk (i think its .co.uk) he fitted my mates although his runs of a switch on the trottle to tell it to dump, dont know if your is the same ???

yeah I think joske's said his DV is switch operated.

An old aquantence had a twin trumpeted double piston DV on his "supped up" Audi A3 I believe...now that was loud :s too loud...

The dump valve on a tractor has to be switch operated as you don't get the same pressure rise when you shut the throttle as you do on a petrol turbo car. (mainly due to the fact there is no throttle on a diesel)

Cheers Paul, i will enquire about it.

I own a twin piston dump valve and it is switch operated. However i have pressure loss due to the pipe incorrectly fitting the t-piece, my error. I have however, will get it sorted when my t-piece arrives. So hopely the boost loss will increase the turbo whoosh when i fit th enw t-piece.

Joske

The boost loss will be loosing you power.

When you shut the throttle on a petrol turbo car you can get 50-200% increase in boost momentarily, this never happens on diesels.
