General need a new tyre, a little confused...

I checked my tyre pressures yesterday to find I have a nail in one of my tyres, shame as it's still got about 5mm of tread depth, I've spent the morning looking at new tyres but branded ones seem to have shot up a little since I last needed any (was thinking they'd be about £100 max). My current rear ones are Goodyear SP 9000 205/45r17 v88, to get one of these fitted is around £130 from the usual places, plus they aren't that amazingly rated.

I've noticed there are some cheaper tyres which have better ratings, but either I can't find them to buy inc fitting, or they are a different load rating, I understand my t-jet needs to have at least v88's but given that I'm looking to buy one replacement tyre does it need to be a v88, or can it be something like a w88, or a y91? (The two front tyres are Rotella W88's)

I know I can't mix the profile of the tyre on the same axle (so i'm not looking at 205/40's but I don't know about the load ratings.

The cheapest and best tyres I've found so far which are v88's are Pirelli p zero at ATS for £132 (not sure if this is full cost or just price of tyre?)
p zero nero's for £126 inc fitting at halfords.
and Avon zz3 v88's at £117 at etyres inc fitting.

...Also if i was to buy a tyre online and have it delivered (say a toyo that i can't seem to find to buy and have fitted anywhere) how much would it cost roughly to have the fitting etc done at a garage.

I had one done recently for £15.

Think you need to go for the same or higher load rating matey,

Wondered about having it repaired, but wasn't sure if it was a good move or not.

Not sure how long the nail has been there can't be too long as had the car serviced last month. I only found it as it was at the top of the wheel when I checked the pressures, fortunately it's in the wide groove of the tyre.

Any advice on where to get it repaired?

It does seem a bit daft to spend £100 on a new tyre when there's plenty of tread left yet... and I don't know where I picked the nail up from.

p.s I don't recommend the rotalla's I have on the front, especially when cornering in the wet.

I got it done at Clements Autos on Central Drive, Shirebrook.

The nail was in similar position in the tyre with mine and it had not deflated and they charged me £15.

Its been going strong for about 3k since then and they have done a number of repairs on colleagues tyres as the locals seem to like putting nails out for us outside work.

to name but a few

there are circumstances where there is damage close to the side wall or structural damaging to the Plys of the tyre which will render it unrepairable

I did wonder if i had to take it to a place that specialises in tyres, but then I'd imagine they'd just say I need a new tyre anyway.

I wouldnt personally trust some of the larger tyre chains, cough cough Kwik Fit

As Andy says most of them will do repairs if the tyre isnt damaged too much, i got it done locally for convenience but was happy with them.

might try Bolsover tyres, that way it's a specialist place, should be cheaper and more convenient.



If they say it can't be repaired that Hi-Q is the cheapest for a brand of new tyre I've come across to date.

There is one cheaper brand from the list, it's the Wanli S1063 w88, I found a price of £77.40 at mytyres.com, plus £12.34 for fitting. Not too many reviews to go on but people seem surprised by them, better rated on there than my Dunlops anyway.

I find that the cheapest option for new tyres is www.camskill.co.uk , I get my tyres from there and then pay £9 fitting + balancing at my local garage. £9 is the cheapest I've seen for fitting and balancing, some garages can charge up to about £15. Just ring them up beforehand and ask them if they will fit and balance a tyre for you if you supply the tyre.

Even if I can get this one repaired it's good to know for the future, not be too long before those dodgy Rotalla's will need replacing.

The majority do fit tyres bought off the internet, business is business.

Tyre/puncture repairs must by law conform to BSAU159f. Part of the standard states holes MUST be plugged from the inside. If the hole is not plugged water will ingress between the plys causing deformation and possible rusting of the steel cords.

You will find its the small one man band backstreet type tyre outfits looking to make a quick buck and who are not worried about quality or reputation who will ignore this requirement and just glue a patch on........ rather than the big boys like kwik fit, National tyre. ATS etc who because they are constantly in the public eye and being dropped on by trading standards follow the requirements to the letter.

IMO i would completely disagree with you, smaller independant garages rely on reputation and word of mouth, and in my case i watched him repair it (by the correct method)

Contrast that to larger chains, who dont really have to worry about doing a bad job and putting one customer off as they rely on the custom of the 99% of drivers those who dont know anything about cars will will pick them by default, hence the numerous stories of overcharging and made up faults.

Work for Kwik fit by any chance?

I have wanli 88w xl tyres on my car. They have been brilliant. Had 7mm on the front when I bought the car and I have done 21k since. Still 3mm left. Dependant on road surface in 2nd or 3rd gear accelerating in the wet they will loose grip but so long as your not daft they are no problem. Road noise is acceptable too.

I lifted this comment from my local newspaper, care to explain how and why 40% of the local tyre retailers surveyed didnt even know about the requirements?? And please dont tell me those that didnt comply are probably all the major chains that operate quality systems and staff training policies.
