National Speed Limit Petition, Sign in here, Closing date 9th September

Signed. On an equally interesting note anyone watch 5th gear this week and their mk1 Mondeo vs Tractor crash test at 50MPH

Apparently a 50% greater chance of surviving if you hit a tractor from behind at 50MPH rather than 60MPH!

I still believe it should be the current 60, but will always keep the above in mind.

In Warwickshire, around Southam, it appears that the council got a bulk-buying discount on 50 MPH signs, and so they've put them on nearly every national speed limit road. The result? Some of the most dangerous and stupid overtaking I have ever witnessed, INCLUDING double white centre line abuse.

The average person thinks 60 MPH is perfectly reasonable. The trouble is that most people will find 50 MPH unreasonable, and are probably likely to exceed 60 MPH as a result, nevermind 50.

Going to sign it now...

But if your doing 60, your never going to still be doing 60 when you hit the tractor. Unless your asleep

I don't know what the roads are like everywhere but around here if there is a tractor on the road you see it at least 300 yds in front of you which is plenty enough time to slow down from 60 to 30, hell even I can do it on some bits around here without using brakes - just lift off the accelerator, drop it into 4th and let the engine slow the car down.

This is another prime example of the nanny culture taking over again. If anything there should be a minimum speed limit of 50 - force the old folk to drive properly or gtf off my road!

I hate to be a downer but can someone please point me to a case where a petition has resulted in change? I'm convinced the petition site is just a feeble tool attempting to fool the public into thinking they care about anything.

And another thing. Being that our modern cars are apparently 'safer', the speed limit should go up if anything.

At lower speeds, but no car can be safe enough to stop physics working on your body going from 70mph to 0 in 4 meters.

Even a 5 star NCAP car will not often hold any servivors at a head on with another car of above 35-40 mph, and 50 into a none deformable object. And even if someone did survive I think they'd probably say they'd rather be dead!

But if your doing 60, your never going to still be doing 60 when you hit the tractor. Unless your asleep

Why not? Country roads have many hidden dips bends and corners ;)

This country may have democratic elections but once whoever wins gets in they act like a dictatorship. When was the last time a referendum was held about anything the average public really cared about? The current government has shown again and again a complete comtempt for what the majority wants and the petition site is just a placebo for us to vent steam thinking we've actually done something that makes a difference. I'll sign but I'm 100% certain it won't make the slightest difference to what happens.

tbh..... people drive at what speed they feel like and there car can manage...

even if it was lowered to 50 your still going to have people that can tear around it tbh

See plenty of accidents where people do survive??

I think people need better understanding of country roads, their ability, and cars ability. I have been doing a fair bit of driving on rural roads and there were some bends that if you went into at 30 never mind 60 you would not have made it round, FACT, but with all the road signs etc they are easy enough to spot. A few even had a flashing sign with a picture of the bend.
