Hi everyone I am Bruce from OZ!! I have owned a couple of Fiats nothing flashy even owned a multipla which was great being a six seater but any way currently own a Stilo and last weekend gave it a good clean and then took my daughter for a learner drive and she stalled it and since then it won't start winds over no probs but won't fire,it is petrol, and the dash reads security failure loose connection.I have had the battery out several times checked D4 connections used contact spray but just can't see anything obvious, every time I do try to start the radio comes on so switch off and try to restart radio is again on every thing else seems normal just won't start, any ideas anyone?

Check the inertia switch to the right of the throttle pedal behind the panel. If it was a violent stall it's possible it caused it to trip!

Hi, and welcome, :)

does the fuel pump prime when you turn the key..??,
does the immob / key symbol function o.k.?,

Charlie

Hi, Charlie thanks for the quick reply. So by "hear the fuel pump prime" I assume that when I turn the ignition to MAR I should hear some sort of whirring noise as an electric pump kicks in? It's getting dark and raining here in Somerset at present so won't check today but I don't think I do and assuming I should hear something so does that mean I could have a relay out? And secondly by immobiliser/key light function do you mean the car symbol with lock as that symbol comes on and doesn't go off,and again will double check tomorrow,am I looking for another light symbol? Will be interested to hear your reply Bruce

Check inside under bonnet fuse box, prone for corrosion and bad connections. Also check main earth lead gearbox to chassis.

OK,
the basics;

your car has an immobiliser chip built into the key, when you turn on the key in ign. of car , the chip is read by an aerial around lock barrel, and the immob is deactivated - so the yellow light goes out,
one common feature of the immob. is to kill fuel supply,

the tank - in rear of car - has an access panel under the rear seat.. lifting rear seat base makes the pumps whirring louder;)

when presented with ANYTHING ODD ,
I tend to just turn the key to MAR - the position before cranking - and see what dash lights come on .. then go off (self-test).

as mentioned by another poster..there is a fire-prevention system..again it cuts fuel supply..and there is a reset button - typically around front passenger footwell,

if all of this seems to be o.k.,
checking that you get a spark from HT leads is the next logical step..

Hi everyone firstly to PEAT,have only just spotted your quote, the inertia sw I can't see this,do you mean the panel behind the bonnet pull, only about 4" wide all the rest is carpet, what does the inertia sw look like thanks
Thefox thanks for your advice,I have removed the battery removed the earth connection there and cleaned and refitted also have removed the fuse panel under the bonnet pulled apart and cleaned all terminals in both halves,I have also removed the ecu removed cover and checked circuit board for loose pins and any burnt/blackened areas and all ok
Varesecrazy Charlie I have checked the ignition ariel and looked ok is the car/lock the light you are talking about? as said that stays on all the time when trying to start,I can't hear any whirring noise from rear of car a click somewhere in the back but nothing else the fuel cut off I have pushed several times didn't feel it click as if resetting!!! There was a faint buzzing noise coming from under bonnet fuse panel when I first had this problem but now not there,I am assuming one of those relays is for fuel,I will check hand book to see if it says which is which.
Still need more suggestions next to remove plug and check for spark just need an accomplice for that job thanks all keep the suggestions coming in will try anything

Hi, I recently fixed a non starting issue with my fiat 1.6 16v 2006 stilo which would not start with the same immobiliser issue - I looked at every fuse and found in the engine bay F18 kept blowing (7.5A) manual says injector unit or something - dash simply flashed the car security system error - Local Auto electric company diagnosed the fuse box under the bonnet - replaced and it fixed it :0) - Cost £300 with parts, labour & VAT though :0( and another £160 in car hire as the part had to come from Italy - no UK stock

This may be simpler than what is suggested in the above posts.

The problem is when you wash the car (especially at the pressure washers), there's moisture or water going into the connectors behind the fuse box (which is after the battery as you remove the cover). When she stalled the engine the connector may have moved ever so slightly into a position where its connection is loose.

I had this problem and I suspected the connector was at fault so just popped up the hood and wiggled the battery cover (rather violently but not like you want to kill it). Went back in the car, started up just fine, was good for another 3 months.

When I got a chance, cleaned the connectors and it's been fine ever since.

The error I had on the dash was "Loose Connection - Car Security Failure".

I suspect it's actually a loose connection and nothing broken because you've previously washed the car.

I hope this helps.

Vlad.
