Panda (Classic) My Panda CLX

Introduction

Hi All

I am new to the forum and the Fiat Panda scene. I have just purchased a 1993 Panda 1000 CLX she has 75000 on the clock. She is in need of some TLC as she has been sitting in a workshop for the passed 7 months unused and neglected.

At a quick glance she needs a new exhaust manifold to head gasket, two new tyres and possibly a set of new front brake pads for the MOT.

She has a few bits of trim missing, both doors at the bottom rear corner have rust scabs and a couple of small dents to sort. I will add some photo's of her shortly.

Here's some photo's

Hi and thank you for the replies I always use the same MOT station and they know me quite well. they are the ones that do not do repairs only MOT's. Yes I do have some one that can do the welding the only problem is I do not have a garage or anywhere under cover as yet. As for the headlight aim I can ask the to correct it when I take it back. I am also doing the Advisories.

Hi All

Thank you for your replies.

Just got back from the MOT retest and Holly now has her MOT. How ever where they adjusted the headlight aim for me free of charge they court the connector for the nearside indicator so the front indicator was not working when I left the MOT station still never mind just had to push it back together and al is well.

Question:- Does the front nearside driveshaft have any known issues as I now have what sounds like a knocking or loud rubbing sound coming from there?.

Thank You

Hi All

I have been looking at the knocking noise on the front nearside drive shaft. I have stripped down the tripod bearing and found a large shim that is chewed up. this shim is fitted in between the main diff housing and the cap with 4 bolt holes in. My Haynes manual makes know mention of this shim and ePER is unclear where this shim is.

Does anyone know if it is supposed to be there?.

Hi All

Does anyone have any ideas at what could be causing the knocking noise from the front nearside drive shaft. I would like to try and get Holly ready for next months rally and at the moment she is not driveable as I do not know what other damage may be caused.

Thank you

Eyup lad car looks like she's in good fettle, Pandas are great to work on, cheap to run and alot of fun to drive I think you'll enjoy it (y)

Are you sure it's a shim that has dropped out? Could it possibly be part of the CV joint that has broken away? Has your CV joint failed?

Hi AndyPanda4x4

Thank for the reply. On most front wheel drive cars I have had when a CV joint fails the noise it makes tends to get louder on had cornering and I have found that rotating the road wheel by hand you can feel the CV joint has gone. This is not the case with mine. The road wheel rotates nice and smoothly.

What is happening is the noise appears and about 10MPH and gets louder and faster as you speed up. On jacking the nearside up and removing the road wheel and supporting the hub on the bottom swivel so the driveshaft is in the normal running position as starting the car and running through the gears it still make the same noise. running through the same procedure on the offside there is no noise. I then removed the driveshaft from the nearside and ran through the gears with no noise. this makes me think that there is a problem with either the tripod bearing or possibly the CV joint. On checking the spacer in the tripod bearing it has been battered i.e. bruising on the inner edge and small chip marks in the metal. Thus leaving me to believe there is a problem with the tripod bearing. Help on this would be appreciated.

Thank You

OK, here's a wild theory, sounds like the tripod is maybe not fully seated in the diff. The hubs were apart for the MOT repairs right? did the spacer maybe get left out from behind the wheel bearing, that would leave the tripod a few mil further out than usual when the suspension is assembled, possibly pulling it partway out when it's off centre??? Should be a circular shim on the outside of the outer CV joint where it slides into the bearing (compare the other side if in doubt)
...just a thought.

Hi

No I have not had the hubs apart. The only work carried out for the MOT was new disc and pads and new track rod end boots.

Having now washed out the tripod bearing with clean engine cleaner in a clean container there was some small particles of swarf in the bottom of the container and I suspect these came from the spacer.
