We've got a 2001 Fiat Multipla ( Diesel ). I noticed a leak under the car and upon investigation saw that the power steering fluid level was down. I topped it up, but over time it kept doing down. Eventually, one day noticed it had gone down quite a lot, so decided to get it sorted.

I have breakdown cover, so got the car towed to a local garage where they said I needed a new steering rack. To cut a long story short, they claim they fitted 2 "new" steering racks but there was still a leak ( I saw the leak after the 1st one was fitted and it was pouring out ! ). Garage said the racks were faulty.

3rd was fitted, and for the last 5 days, car has been fine.

Till yesterday ... parked car, had it on full lock, funny noise ... power steering fluid pouring out of car !

Its now gone to a Fiat garage who say that they have traced the leak back to the power steering pump. They won't know whether there's a problem with the rack till they've cleaned all the oil off, put new pump on and try it out.

I can't fathom out what's happened. I guess there must have been something wrong with the rack as I've been driving round for the last 5 days and it's been fine. Can't work out how the pump could suddenly go as well.

Are they all interlinked ?

So now I've coughed up for a new rack and now I've got to buy a new pump.

Maybe someone can explain how all these parts are interlinked and how the scenario I've described could possibly happen ( unless I'm just really unlucky ).

I'm hoping to get my money back from garage for rack repair ( paid via credit card ) as the car ended up in a worst state that when I took it in, but as they only changed the rack ( and now the pump is bust ), I might struggle.
