I've had fantasic help on here from SillyBilly ref replacing the clutch on my Multipla so thank you for all your help. But before I go out and spend on the necessary parts (DO I HAVE TO REPLACE THE DUAL MASS FLYWHEEL) I thought I'd air the symptoms:

It doesn't always play up, sometimes selecting 1st is like hitting a brick wall & sometimes it's like pushing the selector through treacle. I get the stiffness in other gears too sometimes. Reverse is crunchy and noisy.

It's worse in warm weather or when standing in traffic etc.
Other times the gear changes are perfectly fine.
I'm wondering whether the gearbox would have anything to do with it?
I'm grateful for all advice etc Thanks in advance Carin :)

Crunchy reverse is generally a symptom of the clutch not releasing properly. If the clutch works properly, once you push the pedal down everything in the gearbox stops moving; therefore if it crunches the shafts are still turning, Obviously this only applies when stationary. As regards DMF I have a very simple rule. Change 'em. This is because it's impossible (without specialist equipment) to judge the condition. Unless of course bits are hanging off it as is sometimes the case. Even if it's ok now it may be knackered in 6 months time. Of course it's your decision, but how will you feel if you spend all weekend working on it and then find it still does'nt work properly? I know lots of people will say that they did'nt change their DMF and it's been fine for 5million miles etc,' but some people have never changed the oil in their engines in years and got away with it but I would'nt reccomend it! (That's my van I'm talking about I'm ashamed to say!)

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. I'm wondering whether it's worth doing on a car thats 10 years old parts will come to £400 alone hmmmmmm thinking cap on again lol

Very true the 2nd hand car market is a mine field...

Is a 2nd hand flywheel a good option?
I'm thinkng if it comes with a guarantee they must have tested it or am I being naive?

. . . . and then sell your flywheel "second hand - only used once!".

Hi all, I am a vw freak as well as a multi freak, on the vw t4 campervan we are replacing our dual mass flywheels with solid ones---like they used to be.
The dual mass gizmos are supposed to cushion the gearbox on take up of power---thats why they put all the little shock absorber springs in clutch plates. VW dealers actually fit solid ones and as far as I know nobody has reported any probs,---so mine will be getting a good old fashioned solid one when the time comes---approx £120-00 for a kit.:bang:

Still can't find a solid flywheel for a Multi available anywhere, though I doubt if I'll need one.

My dmf is still going strong although I didn't change it when the clutch was done. There comes a point in a car's life when its value can justify a new clutch - but not a new dmf as well.

At one time it was rust which terminated a vehicle, now it's expensive mechanical components. Sometime in the near future I imagine, it'll be the non-availability of superceded critical parts which will turn motors into scrap.

Zundapp, I couldn't agree with you more. I remember the early days when I was forever battling with rust on my cars hoping for the day they would replace the lower metal parts with plastic which they now have but the hassle has moved now to expensive parts that just don't last very long - springs that break (I have never had to replace springs on any of my previous cars and I have had some rust buckets I can tell you) or clutches that only last for 60,000 miles (mine has 54000 and still going though). Some of my previous cars have went well over 100,000 on the same clutch. And finally, expensive parts will eventually render our Multipla's beyond economic repair bringing an end to such an enjoyable car and the end of an era for some.

So many different points of view - thanx to everyone who's taken the time to respond especially the funny ones. Might just try a clutch only as I don't have any judder symptoms, just hope the piggin thing doesn't fall apart when hubby's doin the job or the air'll be blue lol.

I bet none of u guys swear when ur working on your cars do you ahem lmao. Thanks again all; I'll let you know how it goes. That's wot I get for buying a car off a dodgy e-bay trader I suppose! Cost me loads so far
