Technical multipla alternator problem

Hi guys, signed up for the forum a while ago whilst considering buying a multi. I took the plunge and everything was great...........for three weeks. Today the alternator faulty message flashed up and the power steering stopped working. I have had a look and there seems to be a square shaped plug dangling down near the alternator but I can't see where it "lives". Hopefully this is the problem?! Or am I clutching at straws? Does the power steering usually stop working the very second the alternator packs up? Help! Thanks

Could be the auxiliary drive belt slipping ?

I don't know, my mechanic friend is on his way! Does anyone know where I can find out part numbers etc for the alternators?

The prize goes to rmbatty- the tensioner on the auxiliary drive belt was cream crackered. £28 and a handy cousin and all is well! Thanks!
