Technical Multipla 1.9jtd Gearbox Oil Leak!!

I had a Ctroen CX that was notoriously incontinent (engine oil AND the green Martian fluid that drives all of those lovely hydraulics).

Drove it for 5 years like that, just made sure that things were kept topped up.

Downside = messy driveway.

Upside = as the oil is blown back along the underside of the car it helps to prevent corrosion...

Dear Disgusted - Thank you so much!! Cheered me up no end!!

Been out today, listening for the click at pull away and any grating/whirring - feels/sounds as though something come loose underneath so I will take MrT to another garage, have another look underneath. Still oil leak but not so bad, it smells like engine oil with essence of gearbox! Recording (YouTube link) sounds worse/louder than does to me - cannot see that there can suddenly be enormous damage - only travelled about 100 miles since coil spring repair and MOT and absolutely no problems then.

Poor MrT - haven't given up on him yet though!

Thank you so much, again - you've really cheered me up!!

A general observation really, from working on "oily" cars.

1) oil travels downwards. Leaks higher up in the engine sometimes seem as if they come from lower down.

2) A little oil goes a long way. 1/2 an eggcup full make a puddle the size of a lake on your driveway.
Dear Disgusted,

Thank you, again!! My thoughts exactly! The oil was running along the joint and dripping from there (possibly 'cos lowest point and flat bottom?) I wonder if it's coming from somewhere higher up behind the housing (bell housing? - learning all the time!) When I've got m' boys fed 'n' watered I'll be back to scouring Google for causes of engine leaks and their usual locations!! (Not that anything much can be said to be 'usual' about our lives of late!!!)

Thank you again, so much!
