Technical Modifying brakes after putting in an 1242

When I had my Selecta I was very happy with brakes - they were better than average!
I thing new original master cylinder + new good quality discs, pads, pipes + rear drums (selecta has got different, but it's just other type I think, not size, maybe from CC/SC) and servo (power brake) will stop Panda with 1242 easy!
I'm going to keep original Panda's brake in my 1242 16V project...

I'm not sure about vent disc...can you ft them with original brakes system or need to change everything?

I'm not too sure, I would say I can just use the Black diamond disc I showed as a replacement. But then again I dont have experience. Will give my dad a ring, he has had some experience trying to stop a car at 150mph when the brakes were never intended to be used past 110!

Also, what are peoples opinions on Tarox brakes? I have a grooved and vented disc in the garage with a dirty great crack in it!! It was brand new when it failed and was only being used with original vw Scirrocco mk1 calipers. So I am somewhat put off them now.

Is the disc drilled? This does increase the chance of a crack a lot. Tarox are now what we call Red Dot racing I believe.

That racing panda above is curious. Those spacers made me spit my tea out!

Nope the disc wasnt even drilled. The crack is radial and follows the venting rather than the grooves, so it is probably due to extreme heat. There is no scoring on either side so its not another brake components fault. It just literally failed! Some friends noticed the brake disc was glowing bright red at dusk during the race. But this could have been after it had cracked rather than what caused it.

My thoughts were that it had a material defect, as this disc should have been more than strong enough for such a light car on standard calipers.

PS yeah, those spacers could almost be made into wheels!

Dufty01 and I have gone for EBC grooved and drilled discs with pads to suit for our 1242cc 16v parade. The label on the box said they were rear discs from an Lancia Delta Integrale but will fit Uno and Panda also.:)

Cool, lancia delta brakes. Are they expensive? I'm looking at around £80 for the black diamond ones which are just grooved. I was going to avoid the drilled brakes though as I am not sure if they are necessary and want to play on the safe side and have a stronger disc.

If the brakes feel spongier after fitting braided hoses then either the hoses are faulty or the job wasn't done properly, ie, the brakes weren't bled properly.

The whole idea of braiding a hose is to help strengthen the hose wall and restrict it from expanding outwards when internal pressure is applied. Some of the effort put into braking is lost due to flexible hoses expanding ever so slightly and is not normally an issue on normal production cars. Putting braided hoses on a car is just a small part of improving the braking when modifying them to go faster and stop better.

Worth a look at OMP as they make groved and drilled discs with fast road pads that are a direct replacement for standard panda/y10. I have them on my y10 but not been out on the road with them yet.

They are the same fitment as delta rear disc and also some alfas

Thnks for the tip off! I will look into them. Although I was looking to avoid drilled, but if the price is right! (y) Were they less than £80 for the OMP discs?

YB Racing was who i got them from for £74 part number is TFS/2017 http://www.ybracing.co.uk/page1.php?sitepage=4&area4=&subarea=317&part=2228

It did take a while to get them i.e. 3 months  as they had to be orded from OMP. It didn't help that the factory was closed for the traditional month holiday in August.

Unfortunately they don't have a non drilled option.

Cheers

Dave

Discs look thicker. So how to fit them with original calipers? Do you fit thiner brake pads?

I think that is just a generic picture of all their discs. The ones in the picture are drilled, grooved and also vented but panda discs are not thick enough to include the vents. It states at the top of the description they are geometrically identical to the standard ones.

I think I am prefering the Black diamond ones though, but I am in no hurry as the restoration is looking to take me a while to complete and the new engine is progressing at snail pace.

sorry I meant OMP discs, Dufty also informs me that he has a set of greenstuff and redstuff pads.

Also folks please remember to warm your brakes up well as soon as you set off or you may find that your uprated brakes don't work when cold

I'm sure i read somewhere that if you swap to braided hoses the brakes need will feel spngier, stretch in the braid i guess. Have a search those who are interested. Sure it was one of the cento lot.

Prime example of "don't believe everything you read on the internet"!!!!

Braided hoses work. No question. I've had customers with hydraulic brakes on bikes complaining that their brakes are too severe after retro-fitting Goodridge braided hoses to their bikes!!

The Uno rear caliper mod requires brackets welded onto the omega axle. The only guy I've ever spoken to who's done it said it was overkill and took them off shortly afterwards as it un-balanced the braking effort and locked the rear up too readily.

I'm going for 'fast road' pads and a bleed when my 1242 goes in and 185/55 tyres (on there now... can't reccomend highly enough so long as you aren't too fussy about your arches!!)... Should be fine.

All the best. Luke. (y)
