Tints aren't on a mot.. And I think it's just a bit too dark.. Doesn't look much at all to be honest! Haven't been pulled in 2 years and being a young driver I'm really surprised :p chance I'm willing to take! Just don't know what to say to my car insurance..
Deliberately misleading the insurance company is illegal, but they won't insure at all if they know you've got illegal front window tints. You've got two choices really:

1) Lie to the insurance company and hope you get away with it. This is most definitely illegal and won't win you any friends here.

2) Remove the front tints, which you know full well are illegal anyway, therefore removing any need to lie to the insurance company in the first place.

Thanks wee smurf :) I'm just worrying about my tints!

As others are saying, you're right to be worried.

In the UK at least, there is absolutely no scope whatsoever for aftermarket tinting the front windows on most modern cars. I remember a reputable window tinting company posting that adding even a single clear sheet of clingfilm to the side windows was sufficient to put them below the legal limit for light transmission.

I'm honestly not trying to preach or be a smart arse, its a serious safety issue and i'd genuinely hate to hear that you've been t-boned on a junction by something you didn't see coming properly.

They are just a little bit too dark. I'll tell the insurance company that they are tinted.
35mph is only a little bit over a 30mph speed limit, you can still find yourself in trouble for doing it though...

I doubt any insurance company will quote you if you're honest and tell them it's the front windows which have after market tint on them.

Might take off front ones. Didn't really see it as a big deal. For me I can't really see much of a difference. What will the insurance company say about just the back ones??

Well, it is a big deal. From the link you posted above:

Vehicles first used on 1 April 1985 or later

The front windscreen must let at least 75% of light through and the front side windows must let at least 70% of light through.
Vehicles first used before 1 April 1985

The front windscreen and front side windows must both let at least 70% of light through.
Penalties for having wrongly tinted windows

It’s illegal to fit or sell glass (or a vehicle already fitted with glass) that breaks the rules on tinted windows.

The police or DVSA vehicle examiners use light measuring equipment to measure window tint.
If your windscreen or front side windows are tinted too much you could get:
  • a ‘prohibition notice’ stopping you using your vehicle on the road until you have the extra tint removed
  • a penalty notice or court summons
By your own admission, you have 50% tints, which means that 50% of the light will NOT get through. It is therefore illegal and if you were to have an accident, you are not covered. Which means the other person will hold you responsible for any out of pocket costs.

It`s not worth it.

IMHO

One day it just might be the difference between seeing something, and not seeing something, and in the extreme case that difference could cost someone their life.

I'll just take them off in the morning

Good call (y)

From a legal point of view you can do what you like to any of the windows behind the B pillar; you could even replace the rear windows & back screen with sheets of metal & turn it into a van if you want. From an insurance perspective it's still a modification, and needs to be declared.

Been there done that and was nearly my life.. :p lessons learned and I am always a sensible driver now.. I just prefer if people can't see every single thing in my car.. Xx

Going to declare the back windows in a few weeks.. Will they put my insurance up you think? 19 year old driver...

will be in the hands of your insurer but they do tend to treat young drivers as a bit of a cash cow.

Oh and remember a lot of insurance companies monitor club forums so your insurance company my already know you have tints ;)

I've seen the MoT boys remove some film from a car which was just behind me. They most definitely weren't too careful about it and left the windows looking a right mess. You certainly wouldn't leave with the film still on here!

Haha thanks for that scout.. Making.me feel loads better ;)

I was on a forum that drivers were 'boasting' about what they had done to their cars (without informing their insurance providers) and the speeds they had travelled on 'private roads' then they were surprised when they are refused insurance or are hit with massive premium hikes.

The insurance companies hold all the trump cards ;)

Yes, by how much is what matters. I'm 20 and I rang Admiral about fitting Koni shocks to my car, they told me it would be £27 and some pence extra for the remainder of the policy (over 11 months at the time), so not all mods are expensive to declare.

In the end I couldn't be bothered to upgrade the shocks, but the principle still stands.

For me, £27 would be about a 25% hike on my annual premium .
You've been spoilt with your old age and cheap insurance haha :p.

To be fair, I'm not going to complain when I only pay £500 full comp with no voluntary excess to insure a 100HP aged 20. At the end of the day 27 quid over a year works out at just over 7p per day, which really isn't a lot :).
