Hi there
I've changed the head gasket and bolts (twice on advice from rac), timing belt, aux belt, crank sensor, thermostat, coolant temp sensor, water pump and now it won't fire up i've checked and reckecked my timing it appears to be perfect if i disconnect the coil pack it sounds like the engine wants to go but with the coil pack on i get a hydrauilic clunk when trying to turn over. The order of the leads on the coil pack from the rad in are 2 3 1 4 wondering if this could be wrong?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No the wiring leads are correct
23 and 14, since the punto uses a waste spark system Ie
When cylinder 2 is on compression ready to spark for power
Cylinder 3 is on Exhaust and sparking as it moves onto induction - no need for a spark then so its wasted

Anyway
Since you've had the cambelt changed - Check the phlonic wheel (the goldy coloured wheel you attach the aux belt too

Its Rotation dependant, as it has the TDC marking for the crank sensor

If you fit it 120 either way out - the engine refuses to run, the spark occours detonating any fuel in the cylinders at the wrong time

There is a little black lug on the crank Pulley that slots into the phlonic wheel

What Ziggy describes is, by a long, long, way, the most common error made when changing the cam belt (and will always result in an engine that won't fire).

If you hold the alternator pulley (the one on the crank) up to the light, you should see the big, central hole, 3 holes for the bolts, and a tiny hole which must be fitted on the "pip" on the cam pulley.

Thank you very much guys i will give that a try this morning. Hopefully that will sort it out. I will let you'se know how i get on.:)

Sorted! Cheers folks. The car fired up first turn of the key and everything seems to be ok. Many thanks.:)

Hi Ziggy it was the phlonic wheel as you said it was 120 degrees out. Many thanks the hole in the pulley was glaringly obvious once you had pointed it out thanks again. I'm still having a bit of a problem i think i must have an air lock in the coolant system somehow, but not sure how to get rid of it i'm getting hot air when the car is going but when it is stationary it starts to cool down, any ideas?:)

Was the temp fine before before you started ? If so probably just an airlock. Punto's are a pain in the backside to bleed properly. Usually takes a few attempts to get it done properly.

Theres a few different methods on here which im sure all work well. The way i use is to fill the filler neck right to the very top, and fill a 500ml water bottle to the top. Turn the bottle upside down into the filler neck and while someone else opens the 2 bleed screws and closes them while squeezing the bottle. You will need to repeat this a few times after the engine has heated up/cooled down.

To get the water back down to max simply let the water out via the bleed screw on the rad.

if you have air in the system - you'll hear it running around inside
a gurgaling/rushing water sound

if the system is free of air and fails to keep warm when fans are put on slowly then it could forwell be the thermostat going lazy
a few of us on here (inc me) have this problem at the moment, i must be on the 5th stat in 5 years....

Hi folks
I've renewed the stat during the rest of the work that got done but there is a bit of gurgling behind the dash so i probably have an airlock. The temperature gauge is steady as. I'll try and resolve the issue tomorrow thanks again for the advice.:)

Chances are theres some air stuck in the heater matrix, make sure your heater dial is set to max when your bleeding it (cant actually remember if this helps on punto's or not, but no harm in doing it)

When you bleed ANY car - stick it on max, as it opens up the coolant to flow around the matrix at full speed

if you leave it on cold - it only had a trickle feed - so the coolant doesnt go stagnent
