Hello,

Signed up just the pose this question to you fine folks who im sure know alot more about this car then I do! anyway i own a mk2 punto (2000) and the power steering has failed, the steering is heavy but barable, i was wondering though if its possible to drive without the steering motor to make it slightly lighter? any problems with doing this? this is only tempory till i have a few quid in the bank,

many thanks

You will need the column when you get the service exchange version and just taking the motor off is unlikely to help very much. Check out the links - there is a firm in there doing them for £180. Fitting they say is easy, though I've not done one.

Removing the motor will make little change, as the main reason for the heaviness is the suspension geometry being different to that of a non-PAS Punto.

thanks for the info guys, i took out the motor this afternoon and had a good look over, i dont have a soldering iron to hand so couldnt seperate the circuit board from the motor itself but i did give the relays a few taps with a spanner for the sake of it, to my surprise my steering has become lighter and i can hear slight whirling again like it used to do sometimes before it stopped working, light is still showing on the dash but im almost certain its a problem this the relays or contacts inside the motor, can anyone recommend an easy way to get hold of just this part?

Not good news its probably the relays or their circuits that are going home. A warranted recon/exchange unit is about £180.

If you have the soldering skills, get a big magnifier and a pointed electronics soldering iron and you might find some dry joints.

Hello, i fixed my problem today and it was exactly as you describe, inside the steering motor is a small circuit board with 2 relays, i took out the motor, unscrewed and then unsoldered the board from the motor itself, then re soldered every joint and connection on the underside, resoldered it back on and isolated the black cables as they where before, working fine now check these if you need more info
